On April 24, information from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Can Tho City said that it would organize a quick sample collection of COVID-19 in the community before the holidays of April 30 and May 1, with the aim of contributing to: epidemic prevention safety part before the holiday˳
Accordingly, the number of samples to be taken is expected to be 68,000, sampling frequency is 2 times/week in order to detect COVID-19 infection earlier in the community˳
“We made it clear that the 68,000-sample plan, not 68,000 people, was sampled multiple times by one person˳
The implementation time is about 3 weeks, in which there are many different target groups and in a completely voluntary spirit,” said Huynh Minh Truc, director of the Can Tho CDC˳
According to Mr˳ Truc, taking samples for COVID-19 rapid test is part of the project “Improving the efficiency of using SARS-CoV-2 antigen rapid test (Ag-RDT), detecting COVID-19 in the community in Can Tho City”˳ “, funded by the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc (CHAI)˳
The project was approved by the Ministry of Health and implemented according to the plan of the Can Tho City People’s Committee on responding to new strains of SARS-CoV-2 in the city˳
The implementation of this test is to assess the situation of COVID-19 epidemic in the local community, thereby proposing appropriate epidemic prevention solutions˳
The project will perform rapid antigen testing for students from 5 to under 12 years old at 2 primary schools (with the consent of the student’s parents and the education sector); Samples include teachers, nannies, workers, and students’ parents˳
This testing is voluntary, and parents and students may refuse to participate˳
In addition, districts will take rapid test samples for subjects in high-risk groups who are the elderly and children living in social protection centers; small traders doing business in markets; community/industrial park COVID team members… All also participate in a voluntary spirit˳
What kind of test kit does the project use?
According to the Can Tho CDC, the test kit made in the project is called the COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test Abbott Panbio Test Kit, due to non-refundable aid from CHAI Foundation˳
According to the evaluation, this is a test kit with high sensitivity, simple and safe sampling method˳ After that, an estimated 30 rapid test samples with positive results were selected for re-verification by PCR test˳
In phase 2 of the project, the participants were given test kits and tested themselves at home, positive samples would be verified by PCR testing˳ “This plan contributes to evaluating the effectiveness of the home self-testing strategy that has not been evaluated in Vietnam before,” a representative of the Can Tho CDC informed˳
