The sinuses are cavities located inside the bones of the face and skull, the lining of the sinuses is a layer of soft tissue, this lining is filled with air and is clean˳
When the cavities are closed, blocked, they contain a lot of fluid or pus, leading to inflammation of these mucosal layers, which will become inflamed called sinusitis˳
The most common signs of sinusitis are pain in the forehead and pain in the cheekbones accompanied by symptoms such as: stuffy nose, decreased sense of smell, change in nasal discharge with thick yellow-green nasal discharge, runny nose often down the throat, causing the patient to often spit and spit˳
In addition, there are some other symptoms such as dry cough, feeling of entanglement of sputum difficult to spit, often bad breath, possibly accompanied by toothache, which is maxillary sinusitis˳
Sinusitis is divided into 4 types based on the duration of the disease:
– The first type is acute sinusitis: Having cold-like symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, facial pain, nasal congestion, runny nose˳
These symptoms usually appear suddenly and disappear after about 10-14 days˳ Usually does not last up to 4 weeks˳
– Subacute sinusitis is a type of sinusitis that lasts from 4 to 8 weeks˳
Chronic sinusitis symptoms will persist for more than 8 weeks˳
– Recurrent sinusitis: There will be many recurrences in the same year˳
Can sinusitis be cured?
Doctor Chau Nguyen Tan Tai – Department of Otolaryngology, Gia Dinh People’s Hospital – said that the cause of sinusitis is mainly due to environmental pollution, changing weather, unsanitary living and working conditions, especially those who are often exposed to dust and toxic chemicals˳

For severe cases of sinusitis that do not respond to medical treatment, sinus fungus, or tumors, doctors can perform endoscopic sinus surgery˳
Dr˳ Tai added that, according to the World Medical Journal on Clinical Practice in 2006, rhinosinusitis was the fifth most commonly prescribed antibiotic disease˳
If not detected and treated promptly, it can cause various complications such as pharyngitis, laryngitis, tracheobronchitis, conjunctivitis, lacrimal sac, otitis media˳ Even sinusitis can cause meningitis, brain abscess, arthritis, nephritis…
To prevent sinusitis, Dr˳ Tai recommends wearing a mask when going out and in dusty places˳ Keep the surroundings clean, eat nutritious food˳
Besides, avoid contact with pollen, mold, poor quality swimming pools˳ Unclean pool water is a source of infection for the respiratory mucosal system, especially the nose and sinuses˳
