Causes of low sperm count in men

Assoc˳ Prof˳ Dr˳ Nguyen Quang – chairman of the Vietnam Association of Sex Medicine, director of the Center for Andrology, Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital – said that one of the most common causes of watery semen is low sperm count˳ If a man has a low sperm count, it means that his semen contains less sperm than usual˳

According to Assoc˳ Prof˳ Dr˳ Quang, there are some causes of sperm thinning such as:

Zinc deficiency: Another possible cause of watery semen is a zinc deficiency˳ Men with adequate amounts of zinc are better able to resist the effects of anti-sperm antibodies˳ These antibodies are produced by the immune system, which mistakenly reacts to the sperm as a foreign body˳

Frequent ejaculation: Frequent ejaculation can also lead to the production of liquid semen˳ If you masturbate several times a day, the quality of semen after the first ejaculation may become thin and watery˳ It may take a few hours for a man’s body to produce a normal amount of healthy semen˳

Premature ejaculation: if the diluted semen is watery, it is important to note how clear it is˳ If the semen is very clear, it is also possible that the pre-ejaculatory fluid secreted during foreplay usually contains little sperm˳

In addition, dilute sperm can also be caused by diseases such as varicocele; infection; have a tumor in the genitals; hormonal imbalance˳

  • The gentleman has no sperm

Other potential causes of low sperm count include ejaculation problems, such as retrograde ejaculation, anti-sperm antibodies in a man’s immune system, injury, or other problems with the tubes that carry sperm˳

Does dilute semen cause infertility?

Assoc˳ Prof˳ Dr˳ Quang said that the turbidity of semen is affected by the frequency of men ejaculating and the amount of water in the body˳ The concentration of sperm is what makes semen cloudy and thick˳ So if a man’s semen is diluted, he may have a low sperm count˳ However, this does not mean infertile˳

To determine the correct condition, the doctor needs to test the semen but at least two days after the last ejaculation before taking the sample for testing for accurate results˳

Besides, dilute semen means low sperm count, not zero˳ Therefore, couples still need to take precautions to avoid pregnancy when there is no desire to become pregnant˳

In addition, men can make lifestyle changes that can help increase sperm count, improve semen quality by maintaining a healthy body weight, reducing stress, getting enough sleep, not smoking, and limiting alcohol and stimulants˳

“Men should go to the doctor immediately when they see one of the following symptoms: difficulty urinating, pain, pain or discomfort in the testicles or scrotum, pain in the lower abdomen or lower back, fever, chills, nausea,” Assoc˳ Prof˳ Dr˳ Quang recommended˳
