The story of Mr. Tran Van Coi, 112 years old from Trung Tien hamlet, Nghi Quang commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province, has touched and inspired many on social media. The image of him walking with a cane to attend a birthday celebration at the communal house has spread widely, making him not only a symbol of longevity but also a source of valuable lessons about optimism and love for life.

A Life Full of Meaning

According to Mr. Hoang Long, Mr. Coi’s son-in-law, Mr. Coi now has a large family with 8 children, 29 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Despite his advanced age, he remains in good health, sleeping and eating regularly, and is still able to recognize his family members.

On February 1, the fourth day of Tet in the Year of the Cat, numerous family members gathered at their home to celebrate Mr. Coi’s birthday. What was special was that Mr. Coi walked to the communal house with his cane to join other elderly people at the celebration. His family provided support from a distance to ensure his safety during the journey.

Representatives from the Senior Citizens’ Association of Nghi Quang Commune confirmed that Mr. Tran Van Coi is the oldest person in the locality. His presence is not only a source of pride for his family but also a shining example of willpower and resilience.

Secrets to Longevity

Mrs. Vo Thi Binh, Mr. Coi’s youngest daughter-in-law, shared that he is a kind, cheerful, and loving grandfather who always enjoys working. Even after turning 90, he would still go out to harvest vegetables and sell produce at the market. However, due to concerns about his health, his family persuaded him to retire completely. Initially, he was reluctant, but he gradually accepted it.

In terms of diet, Mr. Coi does not have any specific preferences or demands. His favorite dishes include salty-sweet fish stew, soup, vegetables, and a little meat. Despite losing his teeth, he can still enjoy half a sticky rice cake or a few slices of glutinous rice cake without any assistance.

Heartwarming Stories

Interestingly, Mr. Coi often complains that he has “lived too long” and prepared his funeral arrangements years ago. Every season change, he would throw away old clothes, thinking he wouldn’t need them next year.

“He often says ‘I’m tired of living,’ but each time, we laugh and tease him, ‘You must live longer so you can see your great-grandchildren get married,'” Mr. Hoang Long recounted.

Mr. Long felt fortunate that Mr. Coi attended his wedding ceremony. Although he couldn’t participate in the wedding procession due to health reasons, both Mr. Long and his wife were happy that their young son was embraced and given a blessing by his great-grandfather.
