The Provincial People’s Committee of Thanh Hoa has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism for the appraisal of a conservation project aimed at reinforcing the Hon Vong Phu relic, part of the An Hoach Mountain Artistic and Scenic Site Cluster in An Hung Ward, Thanh Hoa City.
According to information from the Thanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, Hon Vong Phu is made of limestone and has suffered from weathering and cracks over time. Surveys indicate that the area contains multiple layers of residual soil and fractured rock surfaces, with significant erosion.

This site has been struck by lightning twice and affected by nearby quarrying and blasting activities, causing tremors that have widened existing cracks. Minor factors such as heavy rain, strong winds, earthquakes, or explosions can significantly impact the safety of the relic, potentially leading to its collapse.
To ensure the long-term stability of Hon Vong Phu, this project will implement technical solutions to enhance its strength, stability, and resistance to environmental and weather impacts.
The project’s budget is $17 million, funded by the provincial budget, with an expected completion date before April 30.
Previously, Hon Vong Phu had been struck by lightning multiple times. Notably, on June 15, 2022, a large section of the relic collapsed after being hit by lightning.
To identify preservation strategies, at the end of 2023, the Thanh Hoa Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism organized a scientific workshop consulting experts and scientists.
By May 2024, the Thanh Hoa City People’s Committee had installed a lightning protection system costing over $38,000 near the relic.
In September 2024, Mr. Dau Thanh Tung, Vice Chairman of the Thanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, signed an urgent construction order to preserve and reinforce the Hon Vong Phu relic.
Hon Vong Phu consists of a towering limestone mountain accompanied by a smaller rock formation. From afar, these two rocks resemble the figure of a mother turned to stone while carrying her child, waiting hopelessly for her husband’s return.
The Hon Vong Phu relic is part of the An Hoach Mountain Artistic and Scenic Site Cluster (also known as Nhoi Mountain), recognized as a national-level heritage site by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism) in 1992.
