Previously, on October 22, Ms. L.T.C. (born 1926), residing in Trung Hau village, Hoang Phu commune, Thanh Hoa province, was admitted to the hospital with a large tumor on the left side of her face, causing pain, facial disfigurement, and significantly impacting her daily life for many years.

Biopsy results confirmed it was adenoid type basal cell carcinoma – a rare form of skin cancer.
According to the doctors’ assessment, due to the patient’s advanced age and numerous underlying medical conditions, anesthesia and surgery posed potential risks.
In response to the patient’s and family’s desire for treatment, doctors from the Department of Head and Neck Surgery held a hospital-wide consultation, thoroughly evaluating the patient’s condition and health to devise an optimal treatment plan.
“The surgery was completed successfully. The tumor, weighing approximately 0.5kg, was widely excised, and important structures such as the facial nerves and parotid gland duct were preserved, ensuring both function and aesthetics for the patient,” said Dr. Nguyen Quang Hung, Deputy Director of Thanh Hoa Oncology Hospital.
According to Dr. Hung, basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, characterized by slow growth, originating from basal cells in the outermost layer of the skin.
The disease often occurs in older adults, especially in sun-exposed areas such as the nose, cheeks, and temples. Although metastasis is rare, the disease can locally invade if not treated promptly, leading to tissue destruction and facial disfigurement.
“Ms. C. is the oldest patient with such a large tumor to have undergone surgery at our hospital. Just a few days after the operation, Ms. C. was able to eat and converse with her relatives. After nearly two weeks of treatment, on November 3, Ms. C. was discharged,” Dr. Hung informed.
