NEW distributor revealed to Naver: “After surpassing 1 million views in Indonesia, Dark Nuns has also garnered significant global attention, topping the Philippine box office for two consecutive weeks.”
Dark Nuns, released in South Korea on January 24, surpassed its break-even point in the domestic market and continues to attract audiences both locally and internationally. According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), Dark Nuns exceeded 1.6 million viewers in South Korea as of February 10.
Before its release, Dark Nuns faced some controversies over its script and was even called for a boycott due to the director’s unconventional storytelling approach.
Despite this, the film successfully premiered, outpacing competitors like Hitman 2 (starring Kwon Sang Woo), Secret: Untold Melody (starring D.O.), and Harbin (starring Hyun Bin), along with several foreign blockbusters.
To date, Dark Nuns has sold distribution rights to 160 countries, captivating global audiences in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Laos, North America, Myanmar, Singapore, and Indonesia. Vietnamese audiences will get to watch Song Hye Kyo’s masterpiece starting February 21.
In Indonesia, Dark Nuns became the highest-grossing Korean film debut, ranking second among all Korean films ever screened in the country. In the Philippines, it dominated the box office for two consecutive weeks since its release.
South Korean media noted that Song Hye Kyo’s popularity in Southeast Asia remains unmatched, drawing international audiences to theaters.
In response to audience support, the main cast—Song Hye Kyo, Jeon Yeo Been, and Lee Jin Wook—along with other crew members, posed for photos making heart-shaped gestures with their hands.
The film follows the story of nuns attempting a forbidden ritual to save a boy haunted by a powerful demonic spirit. This is the official sequel to the 2015 horror hit The Priests and marks Song Hye Kyo’s return to Korean cinema after nearly a decade, following My Brilliant Life (2014).
According to Chinese media, the gripping script and compelling performances by the two leads make Dark Nuns stand out. The film breaks away from conventional supernatural formulas.
Directed by Jang Jae Hyun, known for the box office success Exhuma (2024), Dark Nuns continues to explore themes of evil and exorcism. It amplifies horror elements with intense exorcism scenes while delving deeply into the psychological struggles of its characters.
Song Hye Kyo’s Bold Leap Forward
The success of Dark Nuns confirms that Song Hye Kyo is not only the queen of Korean television but also a rising star in cinema.
In the film, the Korean screen goddess plays Sister Yunia, a role demanding emotional depth.
Her character is more than just a nun; she embodies internal contradictions. She appears tough, unafraid to use sharp words, breaking away from her usual on-screen persona. Beneath her hardened exterior lies a compassionate heart determined to save the possessed boy.
Song Hye Kyo’s facial expressions bring uniqueness to her character. She admitted to pouring immense effort into the role, living alongside it throughout filming.
Beyond her individual performance, Song Hye Kyo displays excellent chemistry with co-star Jeon Yeo Been (as Sister Mikaela). Their dynamic is built on contrasts: Mikaela is a psychiatrist relying on science, while Yunia acts on instinct and intuition.
Dark Nuns marks another bold step for Song Hye Kyo after The Glory. The 8X-generation star prioritizes complex emotional layers over appearance or costumes.
Born in 1981, Song Hye Kyo rose to fame across Asia with Autumn in My Heart and starred in hits like That Winter, The Wind Blows, Descendants of the Sun, The Glory, and Full House.
Naver noted that Song Hye Kyo is now one of Korea’s highest-paid actresses, alongside Jun Ji Hyun.
“Now in my 40s, I feel more prepared. I’m aware of the age gap between me and younger actors. I must focus on delivering strong performances because I can no longer rely solely on looks,” she shared about her acting choices.
In 2017, she ranked seventh on Forbes’ list of “Korea’s 40 Most Powerful Celebrities.”
Thanks to her beauty and fame, Song Hye Kyo endorses numerous top brands. According to Forbes Korea, the “goddess of bare-faced beauty” boasts assets exceeding $42 million.
