In the match held on the evening of February 12, Buriram United capitalized on their home advantage to secure a 2-1 victory over former AFC Champions League Elite (commonly known as AFC Champions League) champions.

Among the two goals scored by the Thai team, one was netted by Suphanat Mueanta, a star of Thailand’s national team at the 2024 AFF Cup. This goal sealed the 2-1 win during the third minute of stoppage time in the second half.
The other goal for Buriram United against Ulsan Hyundai FC was scored by Brazilian外援 Bissoli Campos in the 20th minute. Meanwhile, Ulsan Hyundai FC’s consolation goal came from Jang Si Young in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half.
With this victory, Buriram United has accumulated 11 points after 7 matches, ranking 6th among the 12 teams in the East Asian region. They have a strong chance of advancing to the Round of 16 of the 2024-2025 AFC Champions League Elite.

The top 8 teams in the East Asian group will qualify for the Round of 16. The group stage in this region has only one more round to go (out of a total of 8 group stage matches), while Buriram United is 3 points ahead of Shanghai Port, the 9th-placed team in the East Asian group.
Another Southeast Asian team also with 11 points, sharing similar chances with Buriram United to reach the Round of 16 of this season’s AFC Champions League Elite, is Johor Darul Ta’zim (Malaysia).
Previously, on the evening of February 11, Johor Darul Ta’zim defeated Australian representatives Central Coast Mariners 2-1. This victory for the Malaysian team even took place on the opponent’s home ground. Johor Darul Ta’zim currently ranks 5th in the East Asian group.
Only a major upset could eliminate Johor Darul Ta’zim from the knockout stage, as in the final group stage matches on February 18 and 19, Shanghai Port (ranked 9th) will face the very strong Yokohama F. Marinos (Japan).
Even in the worst-case scenario, at least one representative of Southeast Asian football, either Buriram United or Johor Darul Ta’zim, will advance to the Round of 16.
