Ho Chi Minh City: Dozens Hospitalized Due to Gummy Smiles and Dark Lips

TPHCM: Hàng chục người vào viện vì… cười hở lợi, môi thâm

Huong (24 years old, a bank employee) rarely smiles due to her gummy smile. Often teased by friends that her “gummy smile” brings bad luck and negatively impacts her career, she decided to seek treatment at the beginning of the year. Her goal was to change her appearance to attract positive energy, enhance her fortune, and build better relationships.

Meanwhile, Ms. V. (32 years old, an online seller) frequently stayed up late and relied on coffee to stay alert for work. Over time, her lips became dark and lifeless, causing her to lose confidence in social interactions and affecting her customer relations. Despite trying various remedies like exfoliating, applying masks, and intensive lip care, nothing worked. As a result, Ms. V. visited the hospital seeking treatment for her dark lips, hoping to improve her career prospects and ward off misfortune.

Dr. Đặng Thị Ngọc Bích, Head of the Dermatology – Aesthetic Dermatology Department, shared that early in the year, her clinic receives over 10 cases daily seeking treatment for gummy smiles and dark lips.

According to Dr. Bích, dark lips can be caused by several factors including genetics, sun exposure, use of unverified cosmetics, and smoking. Although dark lips do not affect health, they can lead to a loss of confidence and vitality.

Ms. V. underwent treatment using two advanced laser technologies—short and long pulses—to break down dark pigmentation into smaller fragments while promoting recovery and restoring a natural pink hue to her lips. After four sessions (each spaced two weeks apart), the discoloration significantly decreased, leaving her lips rosy and even-toned without requiring downtime.

In the case of D., the young bank employee, doctors found that she exposed more than 3mm of gum when smiling. This condition is often caused by overly strong activity in the upper lip muscles. To address this, patients may opt for botox injections or surgical interventions involving orthognathic procedures.

Doctors advise that to maintain healthy lips and prevent discoloration from recurring, individuals should drink at least 2 liters of water daily, use lip balm with SPF 30 or higher, and avoid using unverified cosmetics.

For those concerned about gummy smiles, consulting with experts at reputable medical facilities is recommended to choose appropriate treatments.

“Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, individuals with infections in the treatment area, those taking immunosuppressive drugs, or those with blood clotting disorders are contraindicated for botox injections to treat gummy smiles. People with neuromuscular diseases or allergies to any botox components should also avoid this method,” explained the doctor.
