I’ll Kill You (original title: Die my love), directed by Lynne Ramsay, stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson.
The film is set in a remote American rural area, where writer Grace (played by Jennifer Lawrence) leaves her bustling New York life to move to the countryside with her partner, Jackson (played by Robert Pattinson).
Tragedy strikes after Grace discovers she suffers from postpartum depression and bipolar disorder. The period when Grace cared for their child alone while her husband was at work led her into a severe crisis. Her emotions worsened as she suspected her husband of having an affair.
Grace’s life gradually spirals into despair as she constantly imagines a mysterious man haunting her. She and her husband intensely hurt each other, exposing their anxieties about marriage and the responsibilities of parenthood.
Jennifer Lawrence revealed that when she accepted the role of Grace, she was five months pregnant with her second child. According to the actress, motherhood is a life-changing experience. After giving birth, women enter a completely different world.
Beyond her personal experience as a mother, Jennifer Lawrence also researched the psychological turmoil and breakdown women face postpartum, isolating herself to understand Grace’s pain.
Taking on the role of the husband, Robert Pattinson also shared his perspective on fatherhood: “Finding your role after having a child is incredibly difficult; you don’t know what to do, and there’s no language to express it.”
Robert Pattinson described his character as a man who didn’t thoroughly research fatherhood, so when things fall apart, he only wishes to return to how things were. “It’s like a child’s reaction entering a new relationship,” Robert Pattinson stated.
In May, Die my love was screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, receiving a 9-minute standing ovation and widespread positive reactions from critics.
Damon Wise of Deadline praised Lynne Ramsay’s “brainchild,” describing the film as a beautiful yet brutal story, with lead actress Jennifer Lawrence shining brightest.
“America knows Jennifer Lawrence’s outstanding talent, and this performance could earn her a fifth Oscar nomination if properly campaigned. The film could also mark a new chapter in director Lynne Ramsay’s career,” Damon Wise stated.
Meanwhile, Variety described Jennifer Lawrence’s role as writer Grace as “a pure manifestation of bottled-up rage and utter despair.”
The Daily Beast lauded Jennifer Lawrence for her impressive performance in the film: “Jennifer Lawrence’s captivating performance is truly outstanding; be ready to see her on the Oscar stage once again.”
With such glowing reviews from international experts and recognition from peers, Die my love is anticipated to contend in multiple categories at the upcoming Academy Awards.
The film was released worldwide on November 7. In Vietnam, it is rated 18+ and premiered in cinemas starting December 12.
