This event has also reignited debates about a controversial period in Hermès’ history concerning the use of rare animal skins.

In a video from the All’s Fair fashion files series on TikTok, Kim Kardashian was captured posing with the elephant skin Birkin. She was dressed in a form-fitting grey dress, a matching hood, and white high heels.

Just hours after going viral, the images immediately received strong criticism from animal rights activists and the fashion community.

Ireland Baldwin posted a reaction clip on her personal Instagram, with the caption: “It’s shameful. I don’t understand how these people are still celebrated.”

She emphasized the serious ethical issues surrounding the use of rare animal skins in the luxury industry.

Many fans pointed out that Hermès produced a very limited number of elephant skin bags decades ago, which were reportedly made using the hide of an elephant shot during hunting expeditions.

Although this product line has long been discontinued, the online community still considers it an indelible “stain” on the brand’s history.

Social media saw numerous harsh comments about the incident, such as: “Hermès was already bad with animal leather, but this is too much”; “They do it because people buy, and Kim continues to promote it.”

Many critics called Kim “insensitive” and “callously flaunting wealth.” They argue that elephants are intelligent and endangered species; therefore, using or displaying products made from their skin is “unacceptable.”

The video of the bag was posted by a consignment luxury seller account, showing Kim seated in a luxurious interior with the bag placed beside her.

According to PETA, these elephant skin Birkins date back to the 1980s, were not officially sold by Hermès, and are now estimated to be worth up to $125,000 (nearly 3.3 billion VND) due to their rarity.

Kim Kardashian has not yet issued any response, and her representatives have also declined to comment.

The incident continues to attract much debate, especially after Ireland Baldwin publicly criticized Kim, despite her cousin Hailey Bieber having a close relationship with the Kardashian family.
