On November 18, at the 15th-anniversary celebration of the Clinical Nutrition Center and the scientific conference on nutrition, Dr. Nghiem Nguyet Thu, Director of the Clinical Nutrition Center, Bach Mai Hospital, stated that clinical nutrition acts as a treatment method, helping patients recover faster.
At Bach Mai Hospital, staff from the nutrition center are assigned to clinical units to proactively examine and provide nutritional treatment for patients, regularly accompanying treating doctors on rounds, and participating in hospital-wide consultations for difficult cases, contributing to successful treatment outcomes.
“Pathological nutritional regimens – hospital diets – are developed based on evidence and recommendations from clinical nutrition professional associations.
The center collaborates with clinical units in the hospital to research various dietary regimens for common internal medicine conditions such as severe hypertriglyceridemia, diets for organ transplant recipients, and diets for diabetic patients.
Special attention is paid to controlling the provision of pathological nutritional regimens to ensure technical requirements for nutritional treatment and safety,” Dr. Thu stated.

Dr. Thu mentioned that Bach Mai Hospital is also the first and leading institution in providing dietary regimens for patients with swallowing disorders.
Currently, the center manages about 8,500 meals per day for inpatients, meeting approximately 80% of the demand. The dietary regimens are designed by doctors and nutritionists according to specific pathologies, then prepared in the hospital’s kitchen.
All nutritional meals are calculated and weighed according to recommendations. Additionally, the center inspects the origin and quality of food from suppliers, at canteens, convenience stores, and charity meals. The center also serves as a logistical hub, ensuring food and drink provision for other hospital activities.
According to this expert, patient care combined with a balanced and appropriate nutritional regimen will help patients, especially children, the elderly, and critically ill patients, recover quickly and shorten treatment time. For non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or diabetes, moderation and proper nutrition play a particularly important role.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Vuong Anh Duong, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health), highly praised the center’s standardization of therapeutic nutrition, developing pathological diets based on scientific evidence and international recommendations.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tuan Tung, Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital, stated that the Nutrition Center has completed a comprehensive nutritional treatment system by successfully implementing screening, assessment, and nutritional intervention processes for 100% of inpatients, making nutrition a proactive treatment measure deeply involved in hospital-wide consultations.
“In the coming time, the Center needs to continue asserting its position as a treatment spearhead, promoting the role of clinical nutrition as an effective, irreplaceable ‘weapon’ in treatment, always accompanying other specialties to enhance the overall quality of medical examination and treatment for patients,” Assoc. Prof. Tung emphasized.
