A 64-year-old man, Mr. T., faced a life-or-death struggle after a serious traffic accident, experiencing two cardiac arrests. This is his incredible story of survival at the Central Institute of Tropical Diseases Hospital.
From Accident to the Brink of Death
On February 20th, Mr. T., was involved in a serious car accident. The collision left him unconscious with severe injuries, including an open fracture of the right femur and wounds to his head, hands, and feet. Blood loss and shock brought him to the brink of death.
When the ambulance arrived at the Central Institute of Tropical Diseases Hospital’s emergency department, doctors Phan Văn Mạnh, Phạm Thúy Nga, and their team immediately began life-saving measures. Mr. T. had already suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Rapidly, doctors performed CPR, intubation, and administered urgent fluids and blood transfusions.
A Grueling Battle on the Operating Table

Dr. Hoàng Mạnh Hà, Head of the Orthopedic and Neurosurgery Department, and Dr. Nguyễn Quang Thành, performed temporary hemostasis and stabilized the leg. However, the operating room battle continued. The severely fractured femur, a severed popliteal artery, and uncontrolled bleeding created immense challenges. To save Mr. T.’s life, doctors transfused 8.2 liters of blood, clamped major blood vessels, stabilized the fractured femur, and repaired the torn popliteal artery. Head wounds were also meticulously closed.
Second Cardiac Arrest – A Life-or-Death Decision
Following the surgery, Mr. T. was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. Sadly, he suffered a second cardiac arrest. Blood pressure and pulse plummeted to critical levels, increasing his risk of death. Doctors implemented immediate emergency measures, including increasing inotropic drugs, placing an arterial catheter for continuous blood pressure monitoring, and maximizing blood transfusions.
To stop the bleeding, doctors had to perform a below-knee amputation. This difficult decision was necessary to save his life.
The Fight for Life Continues
Post-surgery, Mr. T. was continuously monitored and received emergency blood dialysis. Over 22 liters of blood products were administered. After six days of intensive treatment, Mr. T. successfully overcame his critical condition.
