Japanese Training Ship Suzunami Docks in Da Nang, Strengthening Naval Ties

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force training ship Suzunami officially docked at Tiên Sa Port in Da Nang, Vietnam, beginning a four-day visit from March 31st to April 3rd, 2025. This significant event strengthens and enhances friendly relations, particularly between the two countries’ navies.

Formal Welcome Ceremony

The visit was met with a formal and thoughtful welcome. Vietnamese representatives, including officials from the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs, the 3rd Naval Region Command, the city’s Border Guard and Military Command, were present. The Japanese side was represented by the Japanese Consul General in Da Nang, the Japanese Defense Attaché in Vietnam, and other officials.

Notable Activities

During its stay, the Suzunami, with a crew of 230 officers and sailors, led by Lieutenant Colonel Mizuno Tatsuhio, will engage in various activities:

  • Meeting with Local Leaders: Visiting and exchanging greetings with the Da Nang People’s Committee and the 3rd Naval Region Command.
  • Interaction with Vietnamese Personnel: Interacting and connecting with Vietnamese naval units.
  • Joint Training Exercises: Conducting joint training activities with the 3rd Naval Region Command.
  • Maritime Services: Engaging in various maritime support services.

About the Suzunami

The Suzunami training ship is a modern vessel equipped with a comprehensive array of military equipment, including artillery systems, surface-to-surface missile systems, torpedoes, and SH-60K helicopters.

The Suzunami’s visit underscores the growing interest and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan, further solidifying friendly relations between the two navies. This visit follows a previous visit by a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force long-range training squadron in February 2022.
