Farmers in Bình Định province are facing significant losses due to unusually heavy spring rains that have caused widespread flooding. The damage is evident in images of residents using boats for transportation, and inundated rice paddies and crops.
Severe Damage in Affected Villages
According to the Tuy Phước District People’s Committee, approximately 25 hectares of rice paddy fields in the ripening stage have been submerged, with the village of Phước Hòa experiencing the most severe damage at 20 hectares. Flooding has also disrupted rural transportation in Phước Hòa, and residents in the Tùng Giãn hamlet are forced to use boats to navigate.
In Tây Sơn District, almost 1,000 hectares of peanuts in Bình Thuận village are at risk, with an estimated 57 hectares already flooded. Mr. Đặng Văn Hiền, Chairman of the Bình Thuận village People’s Committee, noted the unpredictable rainfall has disrupted planting schedules, with the average peanut plant age being only one to one and a half months old. This significantly increases the risk of reduced crop yields. “It’s rare to have such heavy spring rains. Normally peanuts need watering, but now people have to pump water out,” he said.
Flooding has also affected approximately 5 hectares of peanut crops in Cát Hiệp village, Phù Cát District. Farmers are actively working to drain the water to minimize damage.
Causes and Forecast
The Bình Định Provincial Hydro-Meteorological Department attributes the heavy rains to the influence of an equatorial trough combined with strengthening cold air and easterly disturbances. This unusual weather pattern has led to flooding in some areas. The forecast predicts a return to stable weather from today through the beginning of March.
Farmers Worried About Crop Yields
Mr. Trương Văn Châu, a farmer in Cát Hiệp village, explains that peanuts are highly susceptible to rot and death from prolonged flooding. This concern is shared by many farmers in Bình Định during this planting season.
Response Measures
The Tuy Phước District People’s Committee has directed local authorities to closely monitor weather conditions and implement timely drainage measures to mitigate losses.
Conclusion
The unusual spring rains have caused considerable damage to farmers in Bình Định. Local governments are actively implementing solutions to address these challenges, protect crops, and safeguard the livelihood of residents. However, the potential for yield loss remains a concern, necessitating prompt and proactive action from all levels of government and support from relevant organizations.
