Two serious accidents involving sugarcane juicers have been reported, highlighting the increased risk during the summer months.
On May 8th, Việt Đức Hospital reported two serious accidents related to sugarcane juicers. Unfortunately, such incidents are a recurring theme during the summer season.
The first case involved a six-year-old boy from Bắc Giang. He was admitted to Việt Đức Hospital on April 24th with severe injuries to his penis, scrotum, and testicles, leading to a high risk of infection and necrosis.
Dr. Bùi Văn Quang, a specialist at the Urology Center of Việt Đức Hospital, explained that surgeons performed surgery to repair the damaged skin. Full recovery and reconstructive surgery is expected within three months.
According to the boy’s family, the accident occurred when his clothing became entangled in the rotating shaft of the juicer while he was standing too close. The sudden and forceful pull caused severe injuries to his genitals. This rare but serious incident necessitates specialized emergency surgery to preserve function.
The second incident involved a 70-year-old woman from Phú Thọ, a sugarcane vendor. On May 3rd, she was rushed to Việt Đức Hospital with a severely crushed left hand after it was caught in the juicer.
The woman reported feeling dizzy and lightheaded while operating the machine, making her unable to react in time to prevent the injury.
Dr. Nguyễn Thành Luân, a trauma surgeon at Việt Đức Hospital, stated that doctors performed surgery to remove damaged tissue and treated the injured hand, ultimately amputating a finger.
Doctors warn of a rise in such accidents during the summer due to the increased demand for juices, including sugarcane juice.
They strongly advise against allowing children near operating juicers. Elderly individuals and those with underlying health conditions like hypertension or heart problems should avoid operating machines when feeling unwell or experiencing dizziness.
Safe operation protocols, including protective gloves and emergency shut-off switches, should always be implemented.
