Northern Vietnam Braces for Severe Cold Spell Before Tet

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, a strong cold front will affect many areas across the country from the night of January 25 and morning of January 26. This is a critical time close to the Lunar New Year, drawing significant attention from residents.

Weather Updates by Region

1. Northeastern Region and Hanoi

From late afternoon on January 26, provinces in the Northeastern region and the capital city of Hanoi will experience severe cold weather. The lowest temperatures are expected to range between 9-12°C, with mountainous areas dropping to 6-8°C, and high mountain regions potentially falling below 3°C. Frost and frostbite may occur in high-altitude areas.

Hanoi is forecast to experience severe cold days with minimum temperatures ranging from 9-12°C. Northeast winds at levels 3-4, with gusts up to level 6 near the coast, will enhance the feeling of chill.

2. Northwestern Region

This area will also be affected by the cold air but to a lesser extent. Minimum temperatures are expected to range from 14-17°C, with some high mountain areas dropping below 14°C. Days will be sunny, but nights and early mornings will still be severely cold.

3. North Central and Central Vietnam

Starting from the night of January 26, provinces in the North Central region will begin to experience colder weather with minimum temperatures ranging from 14-17°C. In the Central region, temperatures will gradually drop from the night of January 26, ranging from 16-19°C. These areas will also see scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some places experiencing heavy rain.

4. South Central, Highlands, and Southern Vietnam

The South Central region will be less directly affected by this cold front. However, nighttime temperatures will still slightly decrease, ranging from 17-24°C. Days will be sunny with highs reaching 25-30°C.

The Highlands and Southern Vietnam will maintain stable weather, with no rain at night and sunny days. Minimum temperatures in the Highlands are expected to be around 15-18°C, while in the South, they will range from 21-24°C. Maximum temperatures will reach 28-31°C in the Highlands and 30-33°C in the South.

Sea Conditions Warning

From early morning on January 26, the Gulf of Tonkin will experience strong northeast winds at levels 6, increasing to level 7, with gusts up to level 9. The sea will become rough with waves up to 2-4 meters high.

From the afternoon of January 26, the northern part of the East Sea (including the Paracel Islands) will see winds intensify to levels 6-7, with gusts up to level 8-9, and waves up to 3-5.5 meters high. The sea from Quang Tri to Ca Mau and the central and southern parts of the East Sea will also experience strong winds at levels 6, occasionally reaching level 7, with gusts up to level 8-9.

This cold spell will last through the days leading up to Tet, so residents should take proactive measures to protect their health by dressing warmly and avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities, especially the elderly and children. Additionally, ships operating at sea should stay updated on weather information to ensure safety.
