On January 21st, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man attended the opening ceremony of the French-speaking Parliamentary Cooperation Forum on sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate change adaptation. The event was hosted by the National Assembly of Vietnam in Can Tho City, a key economic, cultural, and social center in the Mekong Delta region.
Vietnam Sets Record for Agricultural, Forestry, and Fishery Exports in 2024
In his opening remarks, Chairman Tran emphasized that hosting the French-speaking Parliamentary Cooperation Forum and the APF Executive Board Meeting underscores Vietnam’s proactive, positive, and responsible role in multilateral cooperation frameworks. This event also highlights Vietnam’s commitment and participation in addressing regional and global challenges, particularly in the field of sustainable agriculture.
Chairman Tran highlighted Vietnam’s impressive achievements in 2024, including GDP growth of 7.09%, an economy surpassing $470 billion, inflation controlled under 4%, and total import-export turnover reaching nearly $800 billion. Notably, agriculture contributed $62 billion to export revenue, with rice exports totaling 9 million tons, valued at approximately $5.7 billion.
Toward Sustainable Development Goals
Chairman Tran stated that Vietnam aims to become a high-income developed country by 2045. To achieve this goal, Vietnam is focusing on implementing robust reforms, fostering self-reliance, and nurturing a spirit of national development. Agriculture continues to play a crucial role in ensuring food security and promoting sustainable development.
Opportunities for Collaboration and Innovation
The French-speaking Parliamentary Cooperation Forum provides an opportunity for member countries to enhance collaboration in science, technology, innovation, and digital economy. The National Assembly of Vietnam hopes that through this event, French-speaking countries will work together to achieve sustainable development goals, balancing economic growth, poverty reduction, and environmental protection.
Discussions and Knowledge Sharing
The forum included three main discussion sessions: Cooperation among French-speaking countries in sustainable agriculture, the French-speaking community and food security issues, and sharing experiences in responding to climate change. Delegates and parliamentarians discussed and proposed solutions to promote sustainable agriculture, ensure food security, and effectively address climate change.
The forum took place from January 21st to 24th, culminating in the adoption of the Can Tho Declaration on enhancing French-speaking cooperation in sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate change adaptation.
