Unique Tet Ceremony: Rolling Over a Bed of Nails for Good Fortune

Nghi lễ đón Tết đau đớn nhất: Lăn qua giường đầy gai nhọn để cầu may mắn

Tet is not only a time for family reunions but also a period filled with unique traditional ceremonies across regions in China. One such ceremony is Fan Cichuang—rolling over a bed of nails, symbolizing courage and perseverance.

This ritual takes place in Zhanjiang Town, Guangdong Province, attracting both locals and tourists. It is more than just a physical challenge; it carries deep spiritual significance, allowing participants to wish for good fortune and prosperity in the new year.

Preparing for the Special Ceremony

Fan Cichuang begins with preparing thorny branches, which are tied together to form a “thorn bed” and secured on a traditional square dining table known as a “bàn bát tiên.” These tables symbolize the unity and strength of the community, inspired by the tale of the Eight Immortals.

Once prepared, local men, usually young or middle-aged, roll over the sharp surface bare-chested. Spectators cheer louder when they see blood, believing this displays extraordinary bravery and endurance.

There are various arrangements of the tables, each with its own symbolic meaning. For example, 15 tables arranged in a 3-6-3 structure represent “prosperity in life.” Participants believe that rolling over more tables increases their chances of good luck and fortune in the coming year.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance

The origins of Fan Cichuang may stem from ancient harvest rituals, symbols of survival and courage. According to folklore, only those blessed by the gods can perform this ceremony. Therefore, despite enduring cuts and bruises, participants are proud to demonstrate resilience and perseverance.

One participant shared, “When you’re in an extremely excited state, you don’t feel the pain.” However, not everyone is willing to face this challenge. A local resident humorously remarked, “I’ll climb onto any bed except the one with thorns. No amount of money will make me do it.”

Conclusion

Fan Cichuang is more than just a unique tradition; it reflects the cultural and spiritual values of the people in Zhanjiang. For participants, it is an opportunity to showcase courage, perseverance, and faith in a bright future. If you visit China during Tet, don’t miss the chance to witness this special ceremony.
