Vietnam Needs Technological Independence to Compete Globally

Tổng Bí thư Tô Lâm chia sẻ ở Diễn đàn quốc gia về doanh nghiệp công nghệ số

On January 15th, General Secretary To Lam delivered an important speech at the 6th National Forum on the Development of Vietnamese Digital Enterprises. The event marked a significant step forward in the country’s digital transformation and technology industry strategy.

Opportunities and Challenges for Vietnam in the Digital Era

In the context of globalization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, digital transformation is not just a trend but a critical necessity for Vietnam to close the development gap with the region and the world. Reports indicate that the digital technology sector’s total revenue in 2024 reached $152 billion, marking a 35.7% increase from 2019. This underscores the sector’s remarkable growth and its vital role in the national economy.

However, alongside these achievements, Vietnam faces significant challenges. Research and development (R&D) capabilities still heavily rely on foreign resources, and the country struggles to attract top-tier tech talent. Many domestic enterprises are primarily engaged in low-value segments of the global value chain, mainly serving as subcontractors for multinational corporations.

Sustainable Development of the Digital Sector

To address current limitations, General Secretary To Lam outlined several key priorities to drive the development of Vietnam’s digital sector:

1. Achieving Technological Autonomy and Core Technology Development

Investing in research and development (R&D) of strategic technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, cloud computing, and space technology is a top priority. These technologies form the foundation for building an independent, self-reliant economy and enhancing international competitiveness.

2. Modernizing Digital Infrastructure

Digital infrastructure plays a crucial role in advancing the digital technology industry. The government should focus on investing in high-speed broadband networks that meet international standards, ensuring nationwide connectivity.

3. Attracting Top-Tier Tech Talent

Policies to attract high-level tech talent need improvement by creating attractive work environments, supporting scientific research, and fostering innovation. This will enhance local capabilities and develop internationally competitive digital enterprises.

4. Building a Sustainable Tech Ecosystem

Close collaboration between businesses, universities, research institutes, and support organizations is essential for developing a sustainable tech ecosystem. Promoting public-private partnerships will contribute to producing high-quality digital products and services.

5. Developing Digital Economy and Society

Areas such as Digital Government, Digital Economy, and Digital Society should be prioritized. Technological solutions must be widely applied in state management, improving service quality, and promoting electronic transactions.

Aspirations for “Made in Vietnam” to Go Global

General Secretary To Lam emphasized that this is the right time for Vietnamese digital enterprises to unite and build a robust future for the nation’s tech industry. The “Made in Vietnam” slogan is not only a goal but also a mission to bring Vietnamese technology products to the global market.

The Ministry of Information and Communications, as the national regulatory body for digital technology, needs to continue leading and guiding development, creating favorable conditions for digital enterprises to thrive. Addressing current limitations and perfecting digital infrastructure will also be crucial in enhancing international competitiveness.

Conclusion

The 6th National Forum on the Development of Vietnamese Digital Enterprises is a significant milestone affirming Vietnam’s commitment to developing its digital sector. With the ambition of achieving technological autonomy and competing globally, Vietnamese digital enterprises must strive harder to turn challenges into opportunities, contributing to the nation’s strong development in the digital era.

Let us work together towards a sustainable and prosperous future!
