The Ministry of Transport has recently issued a decision approving adjustments to the master plan for the development of Vietnam’s national airport system for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision extending to 2050.
According to the decision, Gia Binh International Airport (Bac Ninh) will be added to the national airport system plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
Gia Binh Airport is designed as a Class 4E airport, with an estimated capacity of around 1 million passengers annually during the 2021-2030 period; projected to reach 3 million passengers annually by 2050. The total land area is expected to be approximately 363.5 hectares.

The estimated investment cost for Gia Binh International Airport is approximately VND 17.682 trillion for the 2021-2030 period and around VND 12.083 trillion with a vision to 2050.
Additionally, the Ministry of Transport has adjusted the estimated land use for the overall airport system planning up to 2030 to about 24,195 hectares. The required investment for developing the airport system by 2030 is estimated at VND 438 trillion, sourced from the state budget, private funding, and other legal sources.
After including Gia Binh International Airport in the 2021-2030 period, Vietnam will have 31 airports, including 15 international and 16 domestic airports. By 2050, the country is expected to have 34 airports, with 15 international and 19 domestic ones.
Previously, in early January, Bac Ninh Provincial People’s Committee proposed integrating Gia Binh Airport into the national airport network plan.
Construction of Gia Binh Airport, covering an area of approximately 125 hectares, was initiated by the Ministry of Public Security in early December 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. It will be a Grade 3 helicopter airport, Grade 3 military airport, and a civil airport equivalent to ICAO’s 3C standards.
Gia Binh Airport will serve missions for the Air Police Regiment, ensuring security while promoting socio-economic development, similar to the model of Phan Thiet Airport.
