The Powerbeats Pro 2 is an upgraded version of the original Powerbeats Pro wireless sports earbuds, which were first released in 2019. The new model retains the signature ear-hook design of the Powerbeats line but is significantly more compact and 20% lighter than its predecessor.
The charging case for the Powerbeats Pro 2 has also been reduced in size by 33% compared to the previous model, supporting wireless charging via the Qi standard and featuring a USB-C port.
The most notable new feature of the Powerbeats Pro 2 is heart rate monitoring during workouts. Both earbuds are equipped with optical LED sensors that emit pulses over 100 times per second to measure blood flow in the ear. An algorithm collects data from both earbuds to analyze and provide accurate heart rate readings for the wearer.
Heart rate data collected by the earbuds can be synced with health tracking apps such as Apple Health, Nike Run Club, and Peloton. However, Apple notes that if the user wears both an Apple Watch and Powerbeats Pro 2, heart rate data will prioritize the watch.
For iPhone users, heart rate monitoring via the earbuds happens automatically, while Android users need to manually activate this feature through the Beats app or by pressing a button on one of the earbuds.
To ensure accurate heart rate measurements, proper fit is crucial. Beats includes five different sizes of ear tips with the product to help users find the best fit, improving the accuracy of heart rate monitoring.
Apple is reportedly planning to introduce heart rate monitoring in future AirPods models, making the Powerbeats Pro 2 a testbed for this feature.
The Powerbeats Pro 2 also adds Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), a significant upgrade from the previous version. Equipped with Apple’s H2 chip, the earbuds support features similar to those on AirPods, such as voice control, Find My functionality, and personalized audio settings.
Android users can access some features of the Powerbeats Pro 2 through the Beats app, but the experience won’t be as comprehensive as it is for iPhone users.
Battery life has also been improved. Apple claims the earbuds can last up to 8 hours with ANC enabled or 10 hours with ANC disabled. Including the charging case, total battery life extends to 36 hours with ANC on and 45 hours with ANC off.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 maintains an IPX4 water resistance rating, protecting against sweat during workouts. Beats states that the new earbuds have improved durability for extended use.
Priced at $249, the same as the previous model, the Powerbeats Pro 2 comes in four colors: orange, purple, gray, and black.
