On the morning of February 8, under a light drizzle at their apartment in Hòa An Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang City, 18-year-old Nguyen Chi Chan woke up early.

In the living room, his mother, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Oanh (43), left a note reminding her three children not to go outside due to the rain. With 100,000 VND, she instructed them to use 60,000 VND for breakfast and save the rest for lunch.

Before Tet, both Chan and his twin brother, Nguyen Chi Chinh, had submitted voluntary enlistment applications. Both were accepted and received orders to report for military service on February 13, carrying mixed emotions.

Their mother, Oanh, worked multiple jobs to support them. Understanding her struggles, all three siblings have been obedient and respectful.

Their older brother is currently attending remedial classes, while Chan and Chinh dropped out after finishing the 9th grade. During this time, they worked odd jobs, cooked, and helped their mother with cleaning. After gaining more insight into military life, they decided to volunteer for service.

Chan and Chinh mentioned that they watched videos about military life and wanted to contribute their youthful energy to national defense. They also see it as an opportunity to discipline themselves, grow more mature, and eventually help their mother.

Both brothers have personal career aspirations. Chan hopes to learn bartending, while Chinh wants to study automotive repair.

“Our dream after completing our military service is to learn a trade so we can help our mother with her difficulties,” Chan shared.

When they learned that their grandparents were very proud of their decision, Chan’s grandparents, who sell lottery tickets, encouraged the twins by giving them some money. In January, their mother planned to throw a birthday party for them before they left, but Chan stopped her, fearing it would be too expensive. These days, their mother constantly reminds them to be independent, disciplined, and perform well in the military.

Ms. Oanh expressed her mixed feelings when receiving the enlistment notice for her two sons. She was happy they were starting a new phase but also saddened by the thought of being separated for a long time.

Mr. Le Minh Nam, the Head of the Military Command Post in Hoa An Ward, explained that according to regulations, if two siblings apply for military service, only one is typically accepted. However, in this case, both Chan and Chinh submitted voluntary applications and were accepted. They will be enlisted in the 971st Regiment under the Da Nang Military Command.
