Cement Plant Accident at Song Lam II: Causes and Consequences

This evening on January 24th, the leadership of Anh Son District People’s Committee in Nghe An Province confirmed with the press about a serious workplace accident that occurred in Hoi Son commune. The incident resulted in three workers’ deaths while they were performing cleaning duties inside the cement kiln at the Song Lam II cement plant.

Incident Details

According to initial reports from authorities, the accident occurred around 2 PM on the same day. While the workers were conducting maintenance and cleaning inside the cement kiln, chunks of cement on the kiln’s interior suddenly collapsed. This unexpected collapse trapped the workers, causing asphyxiation and leading to their deaths. Out of the six workers involved in the cleaning process, three lost their lives; all were residents of Phuc Son and Hoa Son communes.

Upon receiving the report, the leadership of Anh Son District and local police quickly arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue efforts and investigate the cause of the accident. Relevant agencies also worked together to clear the debris and recover the bodies of the victims.

Initial Causes

Information from the Anh Son District government indicates that the preliminary cause of the accident was a technical error during the kiln maintenance process. Specifically, the concrete slabs inside the kiln were not thoroughly inspected before the workers began cleaning, leading to their sudden collapse and severe consequences.

District leaders emphasized: “We are cooperating with relevant units to conduct a detailed investigation into the causes and responsibilities of each party. Additionally, we will enhance safety inspections at factories in the area to prevent similar incidents.”

The accident not only claimed the lives of three workers but also left deep pain for their families. It serves as a wake-up call regarding workplace safety in manufacturing plants, particularly in construction and cement production.
