On January 27, the Management Board of the Port and Inland Waterway Transport Service Authority, Quang Ngai Department of Transportation, announced that due to bad weather, passenger ships on the Sa Ky – Ly Son route have been temporarily suspended. Quang Ngai Province has prepared plans to bring all residents of Ly Son island district back home for Tet.
Current Situation and Contingency Plans
Currently, there are approximately 430 passengers registered to travel to Ly Son Island. By January 28 (29th day of the lunar month), this number is expected to increase to around 500 people. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, Quang Ngai Province has coordinated with the Second Coast Guard Zone Command to prepare alternative plans for transporting residents back to the island.

If the weather continues to be poor on January 28, the Second Coast Guard Zone Command will dispatch ships to transport residents back to the island. Depending on the actual situation, Coast Guard ships may pick up people at ports such as Dung Quat (Quang Ngai), Ky Ha (Quang Nam), or Tam Quang (Binh Dinh).
Preparing Transport and Communication
The Quang Ngai Department of Transportation has coordinated with transportation units to arrange vehicles to bring residents to the port where the Coast Guard ships will dock. The docking location and transportation plan will be announced on the Sa Ky Port’s official website in the morning of January 28.
Weather Forecast
According to the Quang Ngai Hydro-Meteorological Station, on January 28, the sea off Quang Ngai Province is forecasted to have winds of force 5-6, causing rough seas. This poses difficulties for ship navigation, particularly for passenger vessels.
Information about Ly Son District
Ly Son District is located 15 nautical miles from the mainland, covering an area of 10.3 km² with a population of approximately 22,000 people. Under normal weather conditions, high-speed ferries take about 45 minutes to transport passengers from the mainland to the island. However, during bad weather, passenger ships must suspend operations, isolating the island from the mainland.
With Quang Ngai Province’s contingency plans and support from the Second Coast Guard Zone Command, Ly Son residents can safely and conveniently return home for Tet.
