Illegal silicone injections are a growing concern in the aesthetic industry, with devastating consequences for many women. These harmful procedures often lead to serious complications, even requiring surgery to save lives. One such case highlights the severe risks involved.
In 2010, Ms. Hoa (name changed) underwent breast augmentation using illegal silicone injections at an unlicensed spa. Unbeknownst to her, this procedure carried significant risks. Only after her breast skin changed color and lumps appeared did she realize the dangers she had unknowingly faced.
Horrific Complications from Illegal Silicone Injections
At Hanoi University Hospital, Dr. Hoang Hong, Head of the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department, explained that Ms. Hoa was admitted with severe breast pain, discoloration, and numerous lumps. Tests revealed that she had received illegal silicone injections, a substance banned for use in Vietnam for many years.
Silicone injections have been banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1991 and in Vietnam since 1995. Despite these prohibitions, unlicensed clinics continue to perform these procedures, leading to devastating consequences.
Ms. Hoa’s case was particularly complex, with the silicone spreading throughout her breast tissue, from superficial to deep layers. Surgeons were forced to remove the entire breast tissue and skin to eliminate the solidified silicone. Although the nipple was salvaged, some silicone remained.
Due to the substantial amount of silicone and its deep penetration, immediate breast implant surgery was not possible. Ms. Hoa will need to wait at least six months for the wound to heal before considering breast reconstruction with fat grafting or implants.
Failing to remove the silicone can lead to serious complications such as infections, necrosis, and even breast cancer.
The Dangers of Illegal Silicone Injections
Illegal silicone injections carry numerous risks, including:
- Acute complications: Redness, pain, blood vessel blockage (from silicone injection into blood vessels), skin irregularities (from incorrect injection), and allergic reactions (less common).
- Late complications: Tissue damage, inflammation, ulceration and necrosis, and persistent discharge.
Silicone triggers an immune response in the body, causing the body to attempt to break down and eliminate the substance. However, silicone cannot be broken down by the body’s enzymes. This process can lead to the formation of scar tissue, which can compress nerves and blood vessels, causing constriction, distortion, or necrosis in the affected areas.
In severe cases, surgery is necessary to remove the scar tissue containing silicone. However, complete removal is difficult and may require partial or total removal of affected tissue, leading to significant cosmetic and functional impairments.
