Dr. Nguyen Quoc Trieu: A Life of Dedication in Vietnamese Healthcare

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Trieu, an outstanding son of Bac Ninh province, dedicated his entire life to the field of healthcare and community well-being. Born on June 22, 1951, in Phu Hoa commune, Luan Tai district, he is not only a talented physician but also an exceptional leader with significant contributions to the healthcare sector in Vietnam.

Educational Journey and Combat Days

In 1968, Dr. Trieu enrolled at Hanoi Medical University, marking the beginning of his path to becoming a professional doctor. However, in 1971, he temporarily put his studies on hold to join the military unit C24-E18-325 Division, fighting in the fierce Battle of Quang Tri in 1972.

On August 25, 1972, at the Quang Tri Citadel front, he was inducted into the Party and wounded during a heavy enemy airstrike. As a fourth-degree disabled veteran, he completed his medical studies at Hanoi Medical University and went on to work as both a doctor and a lecturer at the university.

Key Roles in His Career

He held several important management positions, including roles as a military officer, lecturer at Hanoi Medical University, Deputy Director of the Population and Family Planning Commission of Hanoi, and Director of Hanoi Health Department (1994-1999). Notably, from 2004 to 2007, he served as Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee, contributing significantly to the city’s development.

From August 2007 to August 2011, he served as Minister of Health, leaving a profound mark through the drafting and approval of five health-related laws by the National Assembly. He also initiated Project 1816, which involved rotating specialized staff from top-tier hospitals to support lower-level facilities, reducing the burden on large hospitals and improving healthcare quality in remote areas.

Notable Achievements

As Head of the Central Committee for Cadre Health Care (2007-2019), Dr. Trieu advised the Politburo on three targeted programs aimed at enhancing the health and quality of life for cadres. These efforts yielded significant results, particularly in increasing life expectancy and reducing disease rates.

His significant contributions were recognized with the First-Class Independence Medal, First-Class Labor Medal, Second-Class Labor Medal, Third-Class Labor Medal, and numerous other prestigious awards.

Farewell to an Outstanding Leader

Due to advanced age and illness, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Trieu passed away at around 5:00 PM on January 24 in Hanoi, at the age of 74. His funeral was conducted with high honors, reflecting deep appreciation for his contributions to the nation.
