On January 24th, the lunar date of the 25th day of the last month of the year, the Nghe An Provincial Police Detention Center organized an early New Year’s dinner for inmates serving their sentences there. This event not only holds significant spiritual meaning but also serves as a major source of motivation for them to strive for rehabilitation and return to their families and society.
The Humanitarian Significance of the New Year’s Dinner
Today is the last working day before the Tet holiday. While other inmates continue their labor outside, the kitchen team was tasked with preparing a special lunch. With a rich menu featuring sticky rice cakes, chicken, pork, stir-fried vermicelli, pickled garlic, vegetables, and bone soup, this meal is the result of the inmates’ hard work during their time in rehabilitation at the detention center.
According to Colonel Nguyen Xuan Tra, Deputy Director of the Nghe An Provincial Police Detention Center, the facility currently manages 133 inmates and nearly 1,000 suspects and defendants. All Tet regulations are followed as per government guidelines. In particular, for over ten years, the detention center has maintained the tradition of organizing this early New Year’s dinner as a way to recognize the inmates’ efforts in rehabilitation and encourage their spirits to strive for early reintegration into society.
Warm Atmosphere and Commitment to Rehabilitation
In a warm and intimate atmosphere, the distance between the management staff and the inmates seemed to dissolve. Encouraging words from the officers became a powerful motivator, boosting the inmates’ confidence on their path to redemption.
At the event, homemade cultural performances were held, drawing enthusiastic applause from everyone. This provided an opportunity for the inmates to showcase their talents and express their determination to improve, aiming for early parole and reunion with their families.
Moving Stories from Inmates
This is the second year that inmate Ho Viet Cuong has spent Tet in prison. Sentenced to five years for illegal trading (fireworks), he will be separated from his family for a long time.
“During Tet, everyone looks forward to family reunions. But we, due to our mistakes, cannot enjoy that happiness. These days, the longing for my wife and children intensifies, making me more aware of the price I have to pay. Fortunately, thanks to the care from the officers and the early New Year’s dinner, some of the sadness and homesickness has eased,” said Cuong.
He emphasized: “Through my own experience, I want to remind everyone never to break the law so they don’t have to endure the pain of being away from their families like us.”
Conclusion
The early New Year’s dinner at the Nghe An Provincial Police Detention Center is not only a deeply humanitarian activity but also a significant source of encouragement for the inmates. Through the thoughtful care from leadership and detention center staff, those who have made mistakes gain renewed faith and determination to rehabilitate and return to normal life.
Remember, every mistake comes with a price, but the door to redemption is always open for those who seek to correct their errors.
