Former President Tran Duc Long Honored with 65-Year Party Membership Badge

On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s founding (February 3, 1930 – February 3, 2025), a solemn ceremony was held on the afternoon of February 3 to present the 65-year party membership badge to former State President Tran Duc Long, former member of the Politburo. This event not only honors Mr. Long personally but also marks his significant contributions to the revolutionary cause and national development.

Decision to Award the 65-Year Party Membership Badge

At the ceremony, representatives from the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee announced Decision No. 8001 by the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee’s Standing Committee regarding the award of the 65-year party membership badge to former President Tran Duc Long. He is currently a party member of Chi Bo 9, Ly Giai Ward Party Committee, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.

In a solemn atmosphere, President Luong Cuong presented the 65-year party membership badge and extended congratulations to former President Tran Duc Long. President Cuong expressed deep gratitude for his steadfast contributions throughout his revolutionary career, especially his pivotal role in the country’s reform and international integration efforts.

President Luong Cuong also wished former President Tran Duc Long good health and longevity, and hoped that his family would enjoy a prosperous New Year.

Biography and Notable Contributions

Born on May 5, 1937, in Pho Khanh Commune, Duc Pho District, Quang Ngai Province, Tran Duc Long joined the Party on December 19, 1959, and became a full member on January 3, 1961.

Throughout his career, former President Tran Duc Long held several important positions, including as a delegate to the 7th, 8th, and 10th National Assemblies; member of the Central Committee in the 5th (alternate), 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th terms; and member of the Politburo in the 8th and 9th terms.

Notable Geological Research Projects

One of his notable contributions was his role as co-author in the “Geological Map of Northern Vietnam at a Scale of 1:500,000,” a collaborative project between Vietnam and the Soviet Union from 1960 to 1965. Additionally, he was the lead editor of the “Vietnam Geological Map at a Scale of 1:500,000,” published in 1988, which won the Ho Chi Minh Prize in 2005.

Key Leadership Positions

Former President Tran Duc Long held numerous high-ranking positions, including Director General of the General Department of Geology (later renamed the General Department of Mines and Geology); Secretary of the Party Committee of the General Department; Deputy Chairman and then Chairman of the Committee for Science and Technology of the National Assembly; and Deputy Chairman of the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Association.

From 1987 to August 1992, he served as Vice Premier and Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the Council for Economic Mutual Assistance. From September 1992 to August 1997, he was Vice Premier. Notably, from September 1997 to June 2006, he was a member of the Politburo in the 8th term, a member of the 9th term, a delegate to the 10th National Assembly, and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

In July 2006, he retired but continued to serve as a model party member in Chi Bo 9, Ly Giai Ward Party Committee, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.
