On the afternoon of February 13, at the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Office, General Secretary To Lam welcomed Comrade Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Member of the Central Committee and Foreign Minister of Laos, during his official visit to Vietnam. This meeting marked a new phase in bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Significance of the Meeting and Achievements of Both Nations
During the meeting, General Secretary To Lam congratulated Comrade Thongsavanh Phomvihane on his appointment as Foreign Minister of Laos. He expressed delight at Laos’ significant achievements in recent years, particularly in political stability, national defense-security, socio-economic development, and foreign affairs. These efforts have not only elevated Laos’ regional standing but also strengthened its special solidarity ties with Vietnam.
This meeting held strategic importance, laying the groundwork for in-depth discussions to prepare for upcoming high-level visits. It served as an opportunity to deepen the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, especially in diplomatic relations.
New Directions in Bilateral Cooperation
General Secretary To Lam emphasized that Vietnam-Laos relations are thriving across all fields, bringing tangible benefits to both peoples. He affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to preserving and nurturing this great friendship and special solidarity, making it even stronger and more effective.
He proposed that the two Foreign Ministries closely coordinate with relevant agencies to best prepare for important diplomatic activities, particularly in 2025 when both countries will host major events.
Commitment to Comprehensive Cooperation
Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane thanked General Secretary To Lam for the warm reception and conveyed greetings from Lao senior leaders. He shared key highlights of Laos’ recent developments, including the implementation of the 11th Party Congress Resolution and preparations for the 12th National Party Congress.
The Minister sincerely thanked Vietnam for its immense support, particularly in Laos’ role as ASEAN and AIPA Chair in 2024. He noted that bilateral relations are at their best and affirmed Laos’ commitment to working closely with Vietnam to implement high-level agreements, especially the memorandum from the 47th Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Joint Committee meeting.
Conclusion and Future Directions
Both sides agreed to enhance exchanges at all levels, from central to local, while effectively implementing bilateral cooperation agreements. General Secretary To Lam sent warm regards to Lao President and General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith and other senior leaders, thanking them for the floral greetings for Lunar New Year 2025 and the 95th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
