Hanoi: Many Children Hospitalized Due to Flu, Some with Encephalitis Complications

From October 2024 to date, Hanoi Pediatric Hospital has treated over 1,500 flu cases. Among them, more than 200 cases required inpatient treatment due to complications.

Recently, the Infectious Diseases Department at Hanoi Pediatric Hospital has admitted several children with flu complications, including encephalitis.

Currently, the department is treating a 12-year-old patient who had no previous health issues but developed encephalitis as a complication of the flu. After careful monitoring and treatment by doctors, the child’s condition has improved significantly and stabilized.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Đỗ Thị Thúy Nga, Deputy Director of Hanoi Pediatric Hospital and Head of the Infectious Diseases Department, stated: “In the past month, the number of flu cases at our hospital has been increasing weekly.

However, this trend does not indicate an unusual rise compared to previous years. Instead, it reflects the annual seasonal increase, which typically peaks during winter-spring.

As northern Vietnam transitions between seasons, not only does the incidence of flu increase, but respiratory illnesses also become more common, especially among children.”

According to Dr. Nga, most children with mild flu can recover within 2-5 days.

However, children with weakened immune systems or underlying conditions may experience rapid progression to severe complications such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, encephalitis, and multi-organ damage.

Therefore, parents should promptly seek medical attention if their children show symptoms of illness to receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Additionally, families should closely monitor the condition of children being treated at home to quickly identify any complications and seek immediate medical care.

Given this situation, experts recommend:

  • Annual flu vaccination is a proactive and effective preventive measure, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions.
  • Boosting children’s immunity through proper nutrition and adequate rest.

Preventive measures to avoid infection and control the spread of the flu virus:

  • Regular handwashing with soap.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Limit close contact with sick individuals and wear masks when necessary.
  • Do not share food or personal items.
