Incident Overview
The unfortunate accident occurred on the afternoon of January 22 on Nguyễn Viết Phong Street, Phú Bài Ward, Hương Thủy Town. A group of residents was erecting a fresh bamboo pole to prepare for the Lunar New Year celebrations of Ất Tỵ 2025. When the pole was raised, its tip accidentally touched overhead power lines, causing a strong electrical discharge.
As a result, five people—P.T.T. (born in 1976), Đ.M. (born in 1972), T.T.S. (born in 1953), L.V.S. (born in 1952), and H.T.M. (born in 1975)—were electrocuted and fell onto the sidewalk. They were immediately rushed to Hue Central Hospital for emergency treatment.
Safety Warnings When Erecting Tết Poles
This incident serves as a wake-up call for the public, highlighting the importance of adhering to safety protocols when performing traditional activities during festive occasions. Specifically, it’s crucial to check the distance between the Tết pole and overhead power lines before erection.
Additionally, raising community awareness about electrical safety plays a critical role in minimizing similar accidents in the future. Local authorities and relevant agencies need to collaborate closely to educate and guide residents in implementing preventive measures effectively.
Conclusion
The health conditions of the five electrocution victims are gradually stabilizing, but close monitoring is still required to ensure a smooth recovery process. This incident serves as a valuable lesson, reminding us to prioritize safety when practicing traditional customs. Let’s proactively learn about and apply preventive measures to protect ourselves and our families during upcoming festive seasons.
