Chiều on January 31, Mr. Đoàn Công Hoàng, Chairman of Đắk Ha Commune People’s Committee, Đắk Glong District, Dak Nong Province, confirmed to the press a heartbreaking drowning incident that occurred in the commune, resulting in the deaths of two brothers. This tragic event has shaken the community during the early days of the new year.

The accident took place on the evening of January 30, the second day of Tet. Mr. and Mrs. N.D.T. (41 years old, residing temporarily in Thôn 3, Đắk Ha Commune) could not find their two young children at home and began searching for them. After several calls without any response, the couple became increasingly worried and decided to check the surrounding areas.

Suspecting something was amiss, they quickly went to the nearby artificial pond and discovered both children had drowned. Despite the family’s prompt rescue efforts, initial aid, and emergency transport to Dak Nong General Hospital, all attempts were in vain. The two children, N.M.C. (7 years old) and N.M.Q. (6 years old), did not survive.

Mr. Đoàn Công Hoàng added that the T. family had recently moved from Nam Định Province to Dak Nong about a month ago to work as hired laborers. They lived in a small house within a coffee plantation to take care of and supervise the farm for others.

“The older child, who was 7 years old, had just started attending school locally for two days and had been off for the Tet holiday with his parents. Following the incident, Mr. and Mrs. T. brought the bodies of their children back to their hometown in Nam Định for burial. Local authorities also visited to offer condolences and assisted the family with transportation to return the children’s bodies to their home. It is truly a heart-wrenching event,” Mr. Hoàng shared.

According to local authorities, this artificial pond was dug quite deep and lined with plastic sheeting to store water for irrigation during the dry season. However, due to the lack of protective barriers or warning signs, the pond posed significant safety risks, especially for young children.

Safety Alert During Tet Holidays

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of supervising children, particularly during holidays when parents are often busy with work and family activities. Artificial ponds, canals, or other water storage areas need stricter management, ensuring proper fencing or warning signs to prevent similar accidents.

The community must also enhance awareness of environmental safety, especially in rural areas where ponds and canals are common. Educating children about drowning prevention skills plays a crucial role in reducing such unfortunate incidents.

Conclusion

The heartbreaking drowning incident in Đắk Ha is a wake-up call for the urgent need to strengthen protective measures for children and manage potentially hazardous areas. To prevent such tragedies from recurring, families and communities must collaborate more closely to ensure the safety of children. Remember, a moment of neglect can lead to unimaginable consequences.
