On the afternoon of January 30, a severe traffic accident occurred in Nam Van Ward, Nam Dinh City, resulting in 7 deaths and 2 injuries. Among those saved was a little girl, thanks to the bravery of Mr. Nguyen Van Thai (born 1995), a former military medic.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thai (in black) was one of the first to jump into the canal to rescue victims.
Terrifying Incident Unfolds
According to Mr. Thai, around 3:15 PM, while hosting guests at home, he heard a loud crash outside. He rushed out and found a 7-seat car with license plate 30G-156xx had crashed through the guardrail and plunged into the nearby canal. There were 9 people in the vehicle.
Without hesitation, Mr. Thai quickly took off his jacket and jumped into the cold water to assist in the rescue. “At that moment, I didn’t think much; I just knew I had to save people fast,” he shared.
After breaking the car window, Mr. Thai and nearby residents hurriedly pulled the victims to shore. The situation became dire when a little girl was brought up unconscious. Many believed she had not survived.
Critical Moments That Saved the Girl
With his experience as a former medic, Mr. Thai refused to give up. He carried the girl on his shoulders and ran a few laps to stimulate her body’s response. Seeing her vomit water, he immediately performed CPR. His efforts paid off as the girl gradually regained consciousness and was rushed to the hospital.
After saving the girl, Mr. Thai was still haunted by not being able to save all the victims.
However, Mr. Thai’s rescue efforts did not end there. Upon returning home to change clothes, he received news that the girl he had just saved, N.N.D. (born 2013), was reported dead. Overwhelmed with regret, he continued searching for information about the child at the scene and various hospitals.
Finally, at Nam Dinh Children’s Hospital, Mr. Thai breathed a sigh of relief upon learning that D. was still alive and receiving intensive treatment. “Hearing her say ‘I don’t want the shot,’ I felt truly reassured and left,” he emotionally recounted.
