I. Introduction

As northern Vietnam transitions into the humid season from late February to early April, there is a significant increase in demand for indoor humidity control devices such as dehumidifiers, air purifiers, and air conditioners. This year, the surge in sales of dehumidifiers has been particularly notable, with many electronics stores, supermarkets, and e-commerce platforms reporting a sharp rise in sales. Consumers are especially favoring dehumidifiers that combine air purification and sterilization features, appreciating their ability to improve indoor air quality.

II. Soaring Demand and Stockouts

1. Shopping Frenzy Emerges

Large electronics chains like Nguyễn Kim, Pico, MediaMart, and Điện Máy Xanh have observed a sharp increase in customers seeking dehumidifiers since early February, as the north prepares for the extended humid period. Mr. Nguyễn Tuấn Anh, representative of home appliances at Pico, noted that recent dehumidifier sales have surged by 4-5 times compared to usual. Large-capacity dehumidifiers with integrated air purifiers are particularly in high demand and often out of stock.

2. Sales Surge

Mr. Trần Minh Tuấn, manager of an electronics store in Hanoi, stated: “This year, interest in dehumidifiers has grown significantly right from the start of the season. In just two weeks of February, dehumidifier sales increased by over 500% compared to regular days. Some popular models with good prices and suitable capacities have almost sold out.”

3. Online Channels Stand Out

In addition to traditional electronics stores and supermarkets, online shopping channels have also seen robust growth. E-commerce platforms like Shopee, Tiki, and Lazada have reported a significant increase in orders, especially during promotional events. Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Huy, a representative from a distributor on Shopee, commented: “This year, more than 70% of our dehumidifier sales come from the online channel. Customers prefer this method due to its convenience, attractive offers, and fast delivery.”

III. Consumers Focus More on Product Quality

1. Types of Dehumidifiers

The dehumidifier market offers a wide variety of options to meet diverse consumer needs. These can be categorized into three main groups:

  • Domestic Dehumidifiers: With capacities ranging from 10 to 30 liters per day, these are suitable for small households and only serve to remove moisture.
  • Industrial Dehumidifiers: With capacities ranging from 50 to 500 liters per day, these are primarily used in warehouses and production facilities.
  • Multi-functional Dehumidifiers: Combining dehumidification with air purification capabilities.

2. Changing Consumer Trends

Compared to previous years, consumer preferences have shifted. Besides focusing on dehumidification capacity, consumers now pay attention to additional features such as air filtration, antibacterial properties, and odor removal. This trend has made multi-functional dehumidifiers with advanced technology more popular.

Ms. Nguyễn Thu Hương from Hoàng Mai District, Hanoi, who recently purchased an Electrolux dehumidifier, shared: “Previously, I only cared about the dehumidification capacity, but this year I chose one with air filtration and antibacterial functions. Since I have young children at home, I want to ensure clean and healthy air, preventing bacteria from thriving during the humid season. Despite the higher price, I find it well worth it.”

3. Pricing and Brands

Dehumidifiers on the market vary widely in price, starting from 2 to 5 million Vietnamese dong for “budget” brands like Nagakawa, Kangaroo, and Gree. Higher-end models from brands like Sharp, Electrolux, and LG range from 7 to 15 million dong depending on features. Mr. Nguyễn Hữu Nam, owner of an electronics store in Cau Giay, Hanoi, noted: “Models priced between 3 to 5 million dong and 5 to 7 million dong are selling very well as they fit many household budgets. Multi-functional dehumidifiers with air filtration features are particularly popular because they help reduce dust and bacteria in the air.”

IV. Caution When Purchasing Used Dehumidifiers

1. Risks of Buying Used Dehumidifiers

Alongside new, sealed units available in stores and supermarkets, used dehumidifiers are gaining attention due to their lower prices. However, consumers should exercise caution to avoid buying low-quality products. Most used dehumidifiers have already been in use for some time, resulting in lower durability and lifespan compared to new models. Additionally, they usually lack manufacturer warranties, leaving buyers with limited support for repairs from retailers or sellers.

2. Criteria for Selecting Dehumidifiers

Mr. Nam advises consumers to consider factors such as room size, noise level, and additional features when choosing a dehumidifier. It is also important to purchase from reputable brands with appropriate warranty coverage.

V. Conclusion

The dehumidifier market is thriving as northern Vietnam enters the humid season. Consumers are not only focused on dehumidification capacity but also on additional features like air purification and antibacterial capabilities. Choosing the right dehumidifier that fits both needs and budget is essential to ensure a dry and clean indoor environment. Careful consideration before making a purchase will help avoid unexpected risks.
