In this tournament, the Southeast Asian team created a significant upset. In their opening match, they defeated top-ranked Japan in Asia with a 1-0 victory. Although they lost 2-4 to Argentina in the second match, the team led by Coach Hector Souto bounced back with an impressive 3-0 win against Saudi Arabia in the final match.
Indonesia’s second-place finish in the Quadrangular Tournament, behind only Argentina, is a major success for the archipelago nation. In recent years, the Indonesian Football Association has been promoting the development of all national football teams, including futsal.
At the end of last year, Indonesia shocked the region by defeating Thailand 5-1 in the semifinals and winning 2-0 against Vietnam in the finals to secure the Southeast Asian Championship. This victory solidified Indonesia’s position as a dominant force in futsal in the region.
Inviting strong teams to participate in the Quadrangular Tournament is part of Indonesia’s long-term development plan for futsal. They aim to win a gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games and qualify for the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship. Looking further ahead, their goal is to secure a spot in the FIFA Futsal World Cup for the first time in history.
