In their opening match of SEA Games 33 on the evening of December 5, the Vietnam women’s national team secured a resounding 7-0 victory over Malaysia. This marked Malaysia’s heaviest defeat in the history of women’s football at the SEA Games.

Speaking after the match, Malaysia women’s team coach, Joel Cornelli, admitted: “Of course, at the start of the match, we never thought we would lose 0-7 to the Vietnam women’s team. We clearly understood the differences in physicality, ranking, and quality between the two teams.”
Coach Cornelli stated that the early goals caused Malaysia to completely lose their organization and confidence. He added: “They scored very early, and we lost confidence. We tried to maintain our team structure, but the Vietnam women’s team constantly changed their playstyle. We lost control in the first half. Malaysia exposed too many open spaces. The difference in the teams’ levels was too significant.
The Vietnam women’s team has been playing together for a long time. Player number 23 (Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy) is an excellent player. They are strong, proactive, and decisive.”
The Brazilian strategist acknowledged that he needs more time to rebuild the team, which has not won a SEA Games medal since 1995.
He shared: “I’ve only been working here for six months. We need more preparation time, to integrate and develop young players. We will try our best, hoping to play better and regain our morale in the next match.”

In the second match, the Malaysian women’s team will face Myanmar, who just defeated the Philippines 2-1 in their opening game. Coach Cornelli affirmed that his team still has a chance if they improve their defensive capabilities. He said: “Tomorrow, we will immediately start preparing for the match against Myanmar.
Today was a terrible day for us. I will try to help the players regain their confidence. We still have two matches ahead of us. I hope the players will fight.”
