Measles-like Rash Outbreak in Quang Nam: Developments and Response Measures

Disease outbreaks of suspected measles are becoming increasingly complex in Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province. In response to this situation, the provincial Department of Health has swiftly implemented preventive measures to control and prevent the spread of the disease.

Current Situation of the Epidemic

According to Dr. Mai Van Muoi, Director of Quang Nam Provincial Health Department, as of 5 PM on February 5th, Nam Tra My District Health Center has recorded 23 previous cases and 3 new cases of rash fever. At Trà Leng Commune Health Station, there are 6 previous cases and 7 new cases, all of whom are receiving treatment and responding well to medical protocols.

Prior to this, during the Tet holiday in the Year of the Tiger, three children in Trà Leng Commune died unexpectedly. Among them, two children died due to diarrhea and exhaustion, while the cause of death for the third child is still unclear. From January 31st to February 2nd, Trà Leng Commune Health Station admitted 8 children with symptoms of fever, cough, and rash. The Nam Tra My District Health Department has treated a total of 43 children with similar symptoms from before Tet until February 4th.

Directives and Disease Prevention Measures

Quang Nam Province’s Department of Health has issued directives to relevant units to promptly implement preventive measures. Specifically:

  • Increase manpower: The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has been instructed to bolster manpower for the rapid response team in Nam Tra My district. This team will closely collaborate with the district health center to thoroughly address disease clusters.
  • Vaccination: Health centers across the province have been directed to review target groups and organize catch-up vaccinations for children who have not been vaccinated or have not received the full course of measles vaccines according to the 2025 plan.
  • Inter-agency collaboration: The Department of Health also instructed Nam Tra My District Health Center to advise the district People’s Committee to coordinate with various agencies, departments, associations, and organizations to implement disease prevention measures. Ensuring strict infection control regulations at healthcare facilities is the top priority to prevent cross-infection.

Health facilities in Quang Nam province have been required to be ready to receive and treat patients with measles according to the Ministry of Health’s protocols.
