Argentina claimed a 2-0 victory over Angola.
Last night, Argentina played a friendly match against Angola at the 11 de Novembro Stadium in Angola. This special match commemorated Angola’s 50th National Day, so organizers sold tickets at a “friendly” price of just 1 USD.
Messi started the match amidst enthusiastic cheers from over 50,000 Angolan fans in the stands. The 38-year-old forward played brilliantly, contributing 1 goal and 1 assist, helping Argentina secure a 2-0 victory.
Notably, while this was Messi’s 895th career goal, it marked his first time scoring against an opponent in a match held in Africa. In the past, Messi participated in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but failed to score any goals.
Entering this match, Angola started with great confidence. They put significant pressure on Argentina, causing them many difficulties. It was Angola, not Argentina, who created the first dangerous opportunity, but Kialonda Gaspar’s shot in the 12th minute was denied by goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Later, Chico Banza had a breakaway chance against Argentina’s goalkeeper but also failed to convert. Just when it seemed the first half would end in a draw, Argentina unexpectedly scored in the 44th minute. Messi delivered a through ball to Lautaro Martinez, who swiftly finished, finding the back of Angola’s net to open the scoring.
Despite being down, Angola played quite confidently in the second half. However, the African team’s issue remained their finishing. A similar scenario to the first half unfolded as Argentina scored late in the game.
In the 81st minute, Messi couldn’t get past two Angolan defenders, but the ball rebounded to Lautaro Martinez. The Inter Milan player responded with an assist to Messi, who slotted the ball into Angola’s net, sealing a 2-0 victory.
This was Argentina’s final match of 2025. They will kick off 2026 with a Finalissima (Europe-South America Super Cup) match against Spain, the Euro 2024 champions.
