On February 5th, representatives from Nguyen Trai Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City shared with reporters from Dan Tri that the hospital had recently received numerous thank-you letters from patients. They expressed their gratitude for the dedicated care provided by the medical staff, which helped them overcome severe illnesses and return home to their families. Notably, one patient made a remarkable recovery after a challenging treatment journey.
A Miraculous Escape from Certain Death
Patient N.N.L. (born 1969, from Ben Tre province) is one of the special cases successfully saved by the medical team at Nguyen Trai Hospital. According to Mr. L.’s account, before coming here, he was treated at a top-tier hospital in Ho Chi Minh City but his health continued to deteriorate despite treatment.
“The doctors at the previous hospital advised me to prepare for my end because of the critical condition,” Mr. L. recalled. “My family saw how dangerous the situation was and decided to bring me to Nguyen Trai Hospital. I was admitted to the Emergency Department and later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.”
Upon admission, Mr. L. was in severe respiratory failure, with acute kidney damage, generalized edema, bacterial pneumonia resistant to multiple antibiotics, fungal infections in both lungs, tuberculosis scars, electrolyte imbalances, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hypertension, tricuspid valve regurgitation, poor digestion, and severe malnutrition. This was a complex case requiring close collaboration among various specialties.
After consultation, the treatment team at Nguyen Trai Hospital developed an advanced treatment plan, including switching to new antibiotics for multidrug-resistant bacteria, mechanical ventilation, intubation, vasopressor drugs, antipsychotic medication, and continuous renal replacement therapy to improve kidney function. Additionally, an optimized nutrition regimen was implemented to support recovery.
Remarkable Recovery After Nearly Two Months of Treatment
After 45 days of intensive treatment, Mr. L. was discharged and given follow-up care instructions. More than a month later, he returned to the hospital for tracheostomy revision and granulation tissue removal. After eight days of observation and additional treatment, he was officially discharged in stable condition. Today, he has removed the tracheostomy tube and is completely out of danger.
“My health has fully recovered. I can walk, eat, and live normally—something my family and I never dared to hope for during that time,” Mr. L. emotionally shared in a letter to the hospital.
He expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Nguyen Phuong Giao, who directly treated him. “Dr. Giao is not only highly skilled but also compassionate. Her dedication and responsibility are clear proof of the ‘doctor as a mother’ spirit,” he wrote.
Additionally, Mr. L. sincerely thanked the entire medical team and nursing staff at the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department. “Thanks to these doctors and healthcare workers, I have a chance at a new life, to stay with my family and loved ones,” he emphasized.
A Message of Hope from Heartwarming Stories
Mr. N.N.L.’s story not only demonstrates the remarkable progress of Vietnam’s healthcare system but also highlights the crucial role of responsibility and compassion in medicine. Thanks to the dedication of the medical team, patients who seemed beyond hope regained the light of life.
To achieve this result, the treatment team, led by Dr. Nguyen Phuong Giao, Dr. Vo Gia Huy, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Bao, and all staff at the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department, worked tirelessly, closely monitoring each stage of intervention.
We hope that stories like this will continue to spread hope and motivation within the community, encouraging everyone to value and support the national healthcare system.
