A one-day-old baby girl died at the Ca Mau Provincial Hospital for Mother and Child after receiving a syphilis prophylaxis injection. The incident has sparked public concern and raised questions about the safety of the drug.

Cause of Death

According to the Ca Mau Provincial Department of Health, the newborn, daughter of Ms. N. (from Dam Doi District, Ca Mau), tested positive for syphilis. She was delivered by Cesarean section on February 21st, weighing 3.7 kilograms and in stable condition after birth.

Immediately after birth, the baby received a benzathine benzylpenicillin injection, as per Ministry of Health guidelines for syphilis prophylaxis. However, around 6:45 am on February 22nd, the baby showed signs of cyanosis, difficulty breathing, and severe respiratory distress.

The baby received intensive care, including intubation and shock treatment, but died over an hour later. The Ca Mau Provincial Department of Health concluded that the cause of death was a suspected Grade 4 anaphylactic shock, potentially triggered by the syphilis prophylactic injection.

Corrective Measures

The Ca Mau Department of Health has instructed the Provincial Hospital for Mother and Child to review its monitoring and treatment protocols for similar cases. This is to ensure the safety of future patients.

Further Information Needed

The incident raises questions requiring clarification on dosage, injection methods, and factors influencing the body’s reaction to the syphilis prophylactic injection. The role of doctors in closely monitoring and promptly addressing complications also needs evaluation.

Conclusion

The loss of the newborn baby is a profound tragedy, and a stark reminder of the critical importance of ensuring safety in the care and treatment of newborns. The medical community needs to continue research and improve healthcare service quality to minimize potential adverse events.
