Preserving the Chance of Motherhood for Many Women

This information was shared by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Director of the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the Vietnam-France Obstetrics and Gynecology Conference 2025, held on November 9-10 in Hanoi.

According to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, the conference is a leading prestigious scientific event in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, marking over 25 years of strong professional cooperation between Vietnam and France in research, training, and medical technology transfer. It attracted over 1,500 delegates and more than 80 national and international speakers from France, Australia, Italy, Germany, Malaysia, and other countries.

In addition to specialized topics on prenatal ultrasound diagnosis, gynecological cancer, genetics – prenatal diagnosis, assisted reproduction, placenta accreta, recurrent miscarriage, preterm birth, and artificial intelligence in obstetrics, the topic of reproductive function preservation in cancer is a very novel content, addressing current practical needs.

“Previously, when women suffered from illness, doctors often recommended removal or destruction of reproductive organs. The modern trend is to treat while preserving to maintain reproductive and endocrine functions. To date, hundreds of children worldwide have been born from ovarian tissue preservation in mothers with ovarian cancer.

Or, in the case of an 11-year-old girl who had to undergo ovarian removal for cancer treatment, but thanks to preserved ovarian tissue, 13 years later she received an ovarian transplant and gave birth,” Prof. Anh informed.

According to the Director of the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology, this technique will soon be implemented at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology, offering motherhood opportunities to many women.

Prof. Anh stated that this technique is indicated for individuals with pelvic cancer… who must undergo radiation therapy, as radiation therapy carries a high risk of damaging healthy ovaries, or for women who, due to certain circumstances, delay childbirth.

In Vietnam, the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology is the first unit to begin implementing this technique. Many hospital staff have undergone training, and the hospital has also proposed this breakthrough solution to the Ministry of Health.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Sector Undergoing Strong Transformation

Speaking at the conference, Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, assessed that the Obstetrics and Gynecology sector is undergoing a strong transformation, aligning with the global medical trend, by focusing on pioneering topics such as artificial intelligence in pregnancy screening and cervical cancer, genetics in prenatal diagnosis, modern assisted reproduction, and reproductive function preservation in cancer.

According to Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan, in the coming time, the obstetrics and gynecology sector needs to pioneer the application of artificial intelligence, big data, and machine learning algorithms in risk screening, early diagnosis, and management of high-risk pregnancies, ensuring no pregnant woman is left behind.

Concurrently, it is crucial to urgently standardize comprehensive mother-newborn care procedures, from prenatal to postnatal, aligned with international guidelines and Vietnamese practicalities, to reduce maternal mortality, decrease obstetric complications, and enhance women’s quality of life.

Furthermore, it is important to promote training, research, and technology transfer within the “school – institute – hospital” model and establish centers of excellence in assisted reproduction, gynecological oncology, fetal medicine, and genetics, capable of regional and international integration.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Health awarded the “For Public Health” insignias to four international experts who have made silent, persistent, and effective contributions to the development of obstetrics and gynecology in Vietnam. These professors and doctors are not only talented medical professionals but also cultural and knowledge bridges between the two nations, sowing seeds of trust and friendship in the medical field.
