On April 22nd, the Standing Committee of Ca Mau and Bac Lieu provinces convened a steering committee to develop a plan for the unification of Ca Mau and Bac Lieu provinces.
The draft plan suggests that Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces share similar natural and socioeconomic conditions. Each province’s unique strengths can be leveraged to expand development opportunities.
The two provinces exhibit strong communal bonds, geographical proximity, and shared historical administrative units. They boast well-developed road and waterway networks, which can effectively serve the growing needs of the new province and its connection to the region.
Border area of Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces
Bac Lieu province covers an area of over 2,667 square kilometers and has a population of approximately one million people. Its estimated per capita GRDP exceeds 70 million VND per year.
Ca Mau province, with a larger area of over 5,274 square kilometers, boasts a population of over 1.5 million people. Its per capita GRDP is over 72 million VND annually.
Currently, these two provinces have 16 administrative districts (2 cities, 1 town, 13 districts) and 164 community administrative units (131 villages, 19 wards, 14 towns).
The proposed unification plan will establish a new Ca Mau province by merging Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces. It aims to leverage the combined strengths of both provinces, including land area, population size, and economic growth, and support mutual development to propel overall socio-economic progress.
Following unification, the new Ca Mau province will encompass an area of over 7,942 square kilometers, house a population exceeding 2.6 million, and comprise 64 community administrative units (9 wards and 55 villages).
The new province’s political and administrative center will be located in Ca Mau City (approximately 60 kilometers from the current center of Bac Lieu City).
