Severe Cold Warning for Northern and Central Vietnam

Cold air is engulfing northern and central Vietnam, bringing severe cold spells and potential for damaging cold in some mountainous regions. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts this will continue for several days.

Severe Cold in Northern and Northeast Mountains and Plains

On the nights of March 6th and 7th, the cold front will continue its strong influence on northern and north-central Vietnam. Forecasts predict severe cold, with potentially damaging cold conditions, especially in the mountainous and elevated plains of northeastern northern Vietnam. From Quảng Bình to Huế, temperatures will also drop sharply from tonight. The intensity of the cold will peak during the night of March 6-7.

Scattered Light Rain on March 7th

Increased cold air, combined with strong upper-level winds, may bring scattered light rain to northern and north-central Vietnam on March 7th.

Specific Temperature Forecasts

Mr. Hoàng Phúc Lâm, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, provided these temperature forecasts for the cold spell:

  • Northern Vietnam: Average lows of 12-15°C, with some mountain areas dipping below 8°C.
  • North-central Vietnam: Average lows of 14-17°C.
  • Quảng Bình to Huế: Average lows of 16-19°C.

Detailed Regional Weather Forecasts (March 7th)

Below are detailed forecasts for key areas, helping you prepare for the severe cold:

  • Hanoi: Cloudy with occasional rain. Cold. Low of 13-15°C, high of 17-19°C.
  • Western Northern Vietnam: Cloudy with occasional rain. Cold, with severe cold in some areas; Lai Châu and Điện Biên will experience severe cold. Low of 12-15°C (below 8°C in mountainous regions), high of 18-21°C (some areas in western north Vietnam above 25°C).
  • Eastern Northern Vietnam: Cloudy with occasional rain. Cold, with severe cold in mountainous areas and potentially damaging cold in higher elevations. Low of 12-15°C (below 8°C in mountainous regions), high of 16-19°C.
  • Thanh Hóa to Huế: Cloudy, with possible rain in the north at night and scattered light rain during the day; scattered rain or showers in the south. Cold. Low of 13-16°C in the north, 16-19°C in the south; high of 16-19°C, with some areas in the south exceeding 19°C.
  • Đà Nẵng to Bình Thuận: Cloudy with rain or showers in the north, sunny conditions in the south. Low of 22-25°C, high of 26-28°C in the north, 29-31°C in the south.
  • Central Highlands: Cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening and night, sunny during the day. Low of 19-22°C (some areas below 19°C), high of 29-32°C (some areas exceeding 32°C).
  • Southern Vietnam: Cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening and night, sunny during the day. Low of 23-26°C, high of 32-35°C.

Gradual Weakening of the Cold Front

The cold front is expected to weaken around March 9-10. After that, light rain, drizzle, and damp conditions are expected to return to northern Vietnam. Additional cold fronts may occur throughout March, but are not expected to be as intense.
