Leading Thai newspaper Thairath reported: “Nguyen Xuan Son, the forward of Vietnam’s national team, has won the V-League Player of the Month award for January, despite not playing a single minute this month.”

“This is quite surprising because Nguyen Xuan Son is currently undergoing treatment for a severe injury. He fractured his tibia and fibula during the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final (January 5) between Vietnam and Thailand,” Thairath added.
Due to this serious injury, Nguyen Xuan Son underwent surgery and was diagnosed with an estimated recovery period of up to 8 months.
However, there is a valid reason behind Nguyen Xuan Son being awarded the best player of January in the 2024-2025 V-League. The league’s organizing committee (V-League BTC) combined results from matches played in November 2024 and January 2025 into one award category.
Thus, while the title “Player of the Month for January” might suggest otherwise, it actually aggregates performance points from November 2024 (before the Vietnam national team gathered for the 2024 AFF Cup). In November 2024, Xuan Son performed exceptionally well.

Specifically, in November 2024, from matchday 6 to matchday 9 of the 2024-2025 V-League season, Nguyen Xuan Son scored 4 goals, helping Nam Dinh FC win all four matches that month, securing a full 12 points. Therefore, Xuan Son’s recognition as the best player of the month is entirely deserved.
During Xuan Son’s absence due to injury, Nam Dinh FC failed to secure any victories in January. Thairath highlighted Xuan Son’s importance to the club: “The absence of Nguyen Xuan Son significantly impacted Nam Dinh FC.”
“The team did not win any matches last month, coinciding with Xuan Son’s injury,” continued the report by the leading Thai daily.
Nguyen Xuan Son is still in the recovery phase from his injury. On February 7, he was seen walking without crutches, marking the beginning of his physical therapy. After completing this stage, Xuan Son will need an additional 3 to 5 months before he can resume training with the ball.
