Thai Player’s Unsportsmanlike Behavior Leads to Tough Consequences

Cầu thủ Thái Lan chơi xấu đối thủ và cái kết đắng

An incident occurred in the final minutes of the first half of the match between Buriram United and Kuala Lumpur City in the ASEAN Football Federation Club Championship (AFC Cup) last night (February 6). Buriram United goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom exchanged heated words with Kuala Lumpur City striker Patrick Reichelt. The referee immediately stopped the game to address the situation.

The slow-motion footage clearly shows the incident. After a play, Patrick Reichelt sat on the ground to adjust his shoe. Suddenly, Chatchai Bootprom appeared and grabbed the shoe off Reichelt’s foot with his hand.

Reichelt, unable to control himself, responded by grabbing Bootprom’s collar, causing the Buriram United goalkeeper to fall to the ground. The referee then issued yellow cards to both players.

In the recent AFF Cup 2024 final, another Thai player, Patrik Gustavsson, was criticized for throwing Vũ Văn Thanh’s shoe off the field during the match.

Previously, Chatchai Bootprom had already angered Vietnamese fans during the 2020 AFF Cup final first leg match when he left his goal to deliberately trip Văn Toàn. Despite this, the referee only showed Bootprom a yellow card, which caused significant outrage among Vietnamese supporters.

Chatchai Bootprom recently transferred from BG Pathum United to Buriram United last year. Notably, in the AFC Cup semifinals, the 1987-born goalkeeper will face his former team, BG Pathum United.

In the same tournament, Hanoi Police FC will compete against Indonesian team PSM Makassar in the semifinals. The semifinal matches will be played in a home-and-away format. The first legs will take place on April 2, while the second legs will be held on April 30. The finals are scheduled for May 14 and 21.
