The Four Thieves: Shattering Records and Redefining Vietnamese Cinema

"Bộ tứ báo thủ" phá kỷ lục của Mai, Lật mặt 7, được dự đoán đạt 600 tỷ đồng

The Four Thieves created a sensation at the box office in Vietnam during the Tet At Ty 2025. Just two days after its release, the comedy film directed by Trấn Thành grossed 80 billion VND, breaking several notable records in Vietnamese cinema.

Breaking Box Office Revenue Limits

According to Box Office Vietnam, The Four Thieves achieved an impressive opening day revenue of 30 billion VND on January 29, surpassing the previous record held by Mai (23.3 billion VND) and becoming the highest-grossing film on its first day in Vietnamese cinema history. Moreover, the film reached the 50 billion VND milestone in just 1.5 days.

Additionally, The Four Thieves set a new record for pre-sale tickets with 129,000 bookings, surpassing Flipside 7 (105,000 tickets). Director Tran Thanh expressed his surprise at this achievement, stating, “It’s beyond imagination. I thank everyone very much. This record is challenging even for me. I don’t know if I can surpass it next year.”

Dominating the Lunar New Year Film Race

In this year’s Lunar New Year film race, The Four Thieves overwhelmingly dominated both in terms of revenue and number of screenings. According to Box Office Vietnam, on January 30 alone, the film grossed 38 billion VND with 5,900 screenings. In contrast, Billion Dollar Kiss only reached 4.8 billion VND (1,800 screenings), and Love My Best Friend garnered 1.6 billion VND (1,100 screenings).

By the end of the second day of Tet, The Four Thieves accounted for 80% of the Lunar New Year film market share, far ahead of competitors like Billion Dollar Kiss (9 billion VND) and Love My Best Friend (3.3 billion VND). Foreign films such as Paddington: Bear’s Adventure and Mission Impossible also failed to make a significant impact.

Projected Revenue of 600 Billion VND

Box Office Vietnam predicts that if the current ticket sales trend continues, The Four Thieves could reach 600 billion VND. According to the founder of the company, films well-promoted and released during Tet typically achieve 20-22 times their opening day revenue. This trend has been seen in films like Grandma Nu’s House, Mai, and Sisters Sisters 2. With its current momentum, The Four Thieves has the potential to surpass Mai and become the highest-grossing Vietnamese film in history.

Controversies Surrounding Its Success

Despite its massive commercial success, The Four Thieves has faced some mixed reviews. Some viewers criticized the lack of depth in the plot and characters, believing it did not generate as strong word-of-mouth buzz as Mai or Grandma Nu’s House. However, in an interview with Dan Tri, Tran Thanh emphasized that his primary goal was to provide entertaining laughter for audiences rather than solely focusing on breaking records.

Conclusion

The Four Thieves is not just an entertaining film but also a clear testament to the rapid development of Vietnamese cinema. With humorous content, a standout cast, and a well-executed promotional strategy, the film has captured the hearts of the general public and set new milestones. Stay tuned to see if The Four Thieves will indeed reach the projected 600 billion VND!
