Public Transport in TPHCM’s Sustainable Digital Transformation Strategy
According to the “TPHCM Development Plan for 2021-2030, with a Vision to 2050” recently approved by the Prime Minister, TPHCM is focusing on breakthrough digitalization across key sectors. The goal is to become a smart and sustainable “global city.” Advanced digital technologies will be applied comprehensively to manage and operate fields such as transportation, infrastructure, healthcare, and education, aligning with global trends.

Aligned with the objective of reducing road traffic congestion, the Metro project—a pillar of TPHCM’s modern public transport system—is being accelerated with the ambition to operate 355km of metro lines (7 lines) within the next decade, meeting up to 50% of commuters’ needs. Following the commercial launch of the first modern metro line, Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien), the city has further digitized ticket payments and introduced various digital conveniences for urban passengers.

The collaboration announcement between Metro Line 1, Samsung, and Mastercard took place on February 12 at Ben Thanh Metro Station, marking a new chapter in TPHCM’s sustainable urban transport development. Under this partnership, Metro Line 1 will promote cashless payments via Samsung Wallet, install 252 information display screens, and set up multiple Samsung charging stations across 14 stations and 17 trains to enhance passenger experience and encourage public transport usage.
“This event not only strengthens cooperation among all parties but also contributes to TPHCM’s sustainable digital transformation while realizing Vietnam’s vision of building a cashless society,” emphasized Mr. Simon Sim, Vice President and Head of Mobile Experience at Samsung Electronics Vietnam.

This digital wallet platform, featured on the newly released Galaxy S25 Series and Samsung Galaxy ecosystem (smartphones, smartwatches, etc.), offers practical advantages for authorities, including easy tracking of metro ridership through automated contactless payment systems, eliminating the need for traditional paper tickets to maintain a cleaner, greener city.
As a result, residents and visitors to TPHCM can purchase tickets quickly and conveniently without cash or physical cards, reducing queues at metro gates and ensuring smooth boarding and travel.

In addition to its digital wallet solution, Samsung is implementing long-term initiatives to encourage public transport use. Specifically, Samsung and Mastercard have launched a six-month promotion offering free rides every Tuesday to stimulate metro usage.
To enhance the public transport experience, partners will install 206 screens inside 17 trains for news, updates, and entertainment, along with 46 kiosk displays at stations for passenger information and service guidance. Charging stations will also be installed to support device charging for passengers.
These efforts build on Samsung’s longstanding commitment to promoting digital payments and conveniences in Vietnam. To date, Samsung’s digital wallet has been widely adopted across various public transport modes, including metros, buses, public bikes, and smart parking systems, marking significant progress in the smart urban ecosystem.
