Ngày mùng 2 Tet (January 30), residents in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces embarked on their New Year’s travels to popular destinations such as Phan Thiet (Binh Thuan) and Nha Trang. This surge in travel led to severe traffic congestion on two major expressways: Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay and Phan Thiet – Dau Giay, especially in the direction from Dong Nai to Binh Thuan. Notably, a 5km stretch before the toll station in Cam My District (Dong Nai) saw vehicles moving at a snail’s pace.

Causes of the Traffic Congestion
According to information from Traffic Police forces, traffic volume on the expressways from Dong Nai to Binh Thuan surged dramatically on the second day of Tet. Many sections, particularly on the Phan Thiet – Dau Giay and Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressways, witnessed extremely slow-moving traffic. One of the main reasons for this was the “bottleneck” at the toll station on the Phan Thiet – Dau Giay expressway, where only two lanes were operational.
Additionally, representatives from Vietnam Expressway Investment and Development Corporation (VEC E) noted that despite the widespread implementation of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, some issues still arise. Some newly purchased vehicles have not had their ETC accounts checked, and rental cars often run out of funds in their ETC accounts, forcing them to stop and resolve the issue, thereby obstructing traffic flow.
Solutions to Alleviate Congestion
In response to the complex situation, Traffic Police from Team 6 (General Department of Vietnam Traffic Police, Ministry of Public Security) have been continuously stationed at the intersection between the Long Thanh – Dau Giay and Phan Thiet – Dau Giay expressways. Measures include alternating lane closures towards Binh Thuan to reduce traffic pressure.
Authorities also recommend travelers consider alternative routes like National Highway 1A or other provincial roads to avoid congestion. The congestion is expected to continue during the remaining Tet holidays due to high travel demand.
Tips for Drivers
To ensure a smooth and safe journey, travelers should prepare thoroughly before setting off. Some useful suggestions include:
- Check your ETC account balance: Ensure your ETC account has sufficient funds before entering the expressway.
- Choose optimal travel times: Avoid peak hours, especially in the morning and evening.
- Prepare alternative routes: If you encounter congestion, proactively switch to secondary routes like National Highway 1A or provincial roads.
Conclusion
Traffic congestion on the expressways from Ho Chi Minh City to Binh Thuan during Tet is a problem that needs thorough resolution. Upgrading infrastructure, improving the ETC system, and enhancing traffic regulations awareness will help mitigate this issue in the future. Travelers should be proactive in seeking information and preparing adequately for a safe and hassle-free trip.
Let’s work together to build a civilized and modern traffic culture!
