“Especially in the first 15 minutes, the young Japanese players were as fast as Formula One (F1) cars. I felt like they were running at speeds of up to 300 km/h. They played quickly and scored very early.
Later, although we improved, gained better ball control, I must admit that Japan is still a team of very high quality, and it’s extremely difficult to compete against them,” added coach Emerson Pereira.
U20 Thailand had high expectations at this year’s U20 Asian Cup. However, the heavy loss to Japan in their opening match reflects that the young Thai side still has much work ahead.

U20 Thailand’s next match will be against South Korea on February 17. South Korea is also one of Asia’s top football teams.
Coach Emerson Pereira of U20 Thailand shared, “Our next match in this tournament is against South Korea. We played them about six months ago and lost 1-4. South Korea is a strong team.”
“However, I believe our loss to South Korea six months ago was due to individual mistakes made by U20 Thailand. We need to focus 100% in the upcoming match. Especially, the whole team needs to start better, particularly in the first 15 minutes.
If U20 Thailand plays confidently and addresses our weaknesses, I believe we can achieve a better result in the match against U20 South Korea,” said the Brazilian coach currently leading the young Thai squad.
Notably, in the first round of matches at the 2025 U20 Asian Cup, both Southeast Asian representatives, U20 Thailand (Group D) and U20 Indonesia (Group C), suffered defeats with a score of 0-3. A day before U20 Thailand lost to U20 Japan, U20 Indonesia fell 0-3 to U20 Iran.
